Day by day Itinerary
Day 1
AyutthayaOne of the travel highlights of Thailand, Ayutthaya was once the capital of Siam before Bangkok took over the distinction. Renowned as a sacred city, which was sacked during the 18th century by the advancing Burmese armies, the old city has always been complexly intertwined with Siamese nationalism and religion. Today the former city’s crumbling remains are now spread across a large historical park, making it a fascinating and photogenic place to visit and explore- for the casual tourist and history devotee alike.
The architecture of Ayutthaya is an intriguing mix of differing styles. Soaring, ornate spires called prangs indicate an ancient Khmer influence, as is found in Cambodia. These somewhat resembles the architecture of the Angkor Wat, near Siem Reap. The pointed stupas, however, point to the Sukhothai style.
At its zenith, Ayutthaya was a magnificent city with three palaces and over 350 pagodas and temples set upon an island bisected by canals and waterways. The former eponymous provincial capital rivaled European cities in splendor and was a source of wonder for foreigners visiting it. Even in disrepair, the temple compounds are still astounding, making Ayutthaya a great place to begin any introduction to the history of the beguiling culture of Thailand.
This adventure can be enjoyed as a transfer from Bangkok or starting out in Ayutthaya.
