Summary
This ten-day journey moves north to south through two countries on two wheels, covering 545 kilometres of terrain that ranges from teak forest singletrack to the limestone corridors above the Mekong. Day by day Itinerary
Day 1
Chiang MaiArrival and First Ride Along the Ping River. Guests are met at Chiang Mai airport and transferred to the tour's opening accommodation, where bicycles are fitted and the route is reviewed in full. The first ride follows a gentle path alongside the Ping River, using the afternoon to establish rhythm rather than distance. The route pauses at Ban Tawai, a long-established village workshop district where craftspeople produce lacquerware, carved wood, and woven textiles for both local and international buyers. The ride returns to Chiang Mai as evening settles. Distance: 40 km. Overnight in Chiang Mai.
Day 2
Chiang Dao to Chiang RaiHill Tribe Uplands. The day begins with a transfer to the limestone entrance of the Chiang Dao Cave complex, which serves as the starting point for a route across rice cultivation flats and then onto dirt roads that trace the edges of Akha, Lisu, Lahu, and Palaung settlements. These are functioning communities rather than managed villages, and the pace of the route allows for unscheduled pauses. Palaung women in traditional brass-ringed dress are occasionally present along the road. Lunch is at a forestry station before mountain trails carry the group into the late afternoon. A vehicle transfer completes the journey to Chiang Rai. Distance: 48 km. Overnight in Chiang Rai.
Day 3
Chiang Rai to Chiang SaenThe Kok River and the Mekong Horizon. Fourteen kilometers of dirt road from Chiang Rai lead to Wat Rong Khun, the white-surfaced temple whose detailed mirrored mosaic work is best seen in morning light before visitor numbers build. The route then follows the Kok River through plantation land, the track narrowing at intervals as it approaches the historical settlement of Chiang Saen. The town sits on the Mekong at the northern edge of the Golden Triangle, and the afternoon is spent at an elevated viewpoint where the rivers of three countries converge below. Distance: 65 km. Overnight in Chiang Saen.
Day 4
Chiang Saen to Chiang KhongThe Final Thai Kilometers. The morning route follows the Mekong's eastern bank through tobacco fields and small hill tribe settlements where the agricultural calendar dictates the scene. The terrain is measured for most of the day before the final twelve kilometres introduce a series of steep ascents that mark the natural boundary with the river plain below Chiang Khong. The town sits at the Thai side of the Laos crossing and has a particular quiet that distinguishes it from the busier tourism corridors further south. Distance: 67 km. Overnight in Chiang Khong.
Day 5
Border Crossing and the Mekong by Private Boat to PakbengBorder Crossing and the Mekong by Private Boat to Pakbeng. After breakfast, the group transfers to the pier and completes border formalities with guide assistance before boarding a private river vessel for the passage into Laos. Lunch is served on the water as the Mekong narrows and widens between forested banks and exposed rock faces. The journey takes most of the day, arriving at the small river town of Pakbeng by late afternoon. Accommodation is positioned directly above the water, and the sound of the current carries through the evening. Overnight in Pakbeng.
Day 6
Rural Laos: Weaving Villages and the Oudomxay Descent.Rural Laos: Weaving Villages and the Oudomxay Descent. A vehicle transfer of one hour positions the group in the agricultural interior, where the route moves through settlements of Phu Tai, Tai Lu, Hmong, Tai Dam, Lao, and Khamu communities. Families at traditional looms are visible from the road in several villages, and the guide can facilitate brief introductions where appropriate. A sustained 300-metre climb through the mid-section of the day gives way to views across forested ridgelines before the descent into Oudomxay, the provincial capital. Overnight accommodation is at Nam Kat Yorla Pa resort, set in secondary forest outside the town. Distance: 80 km. Overnight in Oudomxay.
Day 7
Oudomxay to Nong KhiawLimestone Ridgelines and the Long Descent. The route engages with the elevated limestone terrain that defines this section of northern Laos, moving through dense forest before the road opens onto views of the valleys beneath. The day's most notable passage is a 30-kilometre descent to Pak Mong, a small depot town in the hills where the road smooths and the valley spreads below. The final kilometers into Nong Khiaw run parallel to the river with Elephant Head Mountain visible ahead. The resort pool faces the cliff face directly. Distance: 120 km. Overnight in Nong Khiaw.
Day 8
The Nam Ou and the Hundred WaterfallsThe Nam Ou and the Hundred Waterfalls. A morning boat departure from Nong Khiaw travels upriver to a Lao village at the trailhead for the Hundred Waterfalls, a series of tiered cascades connected by jungle paths and shallow stream crossings. The guide leads through sections where natural pools have formed beneath the falls, and a locally prepared lunch is taken at one of the mid-level platforms. The return route follows a ridge trail used by local families, with views across the Nam Ou valley before descending back to the river and returning by boat to Nong Khiaw. Overnight in Nong Khiaw.
Day 9
Nong Khiaw to Luang PrabangRiver, Road, and Arrival. A boat departure from Nong Khiaw moves the group downstream on the Nam Ou to the point where the road becomes the more direct route. The final ride follows the river through teakwood plantation and minor passes, the terrain gentler than the preceding days and suited to the close of a long journey. Luang Prabang's approach is gradual and unhurried. The evening ends at a vocational training restaurant that provides employment and skills to young people from marginalised backgrounds. A night market is within walking distance for those who wish to extend the evening. Distance: 65 km. Overnight in Luang Prabang.
