Chiang Mai to Luang Prabang: Hidden Thailand Ride
Summary
This twelve-day cycling journey moves overland and by river from the walled city of Chiang Mai through the highland interior of northern Thailand before crossing into Laos at Chiang Khong. The riding passes through national parks, hill-tribe territories, and centuries-old temple complexes that receive little outside attention. Days in Laos follow the Nam Ou valley southward through village landscapes and forested ridgelines toward Nong Khiaw, arriving finally in Luang Prabang by river and road. The pace allows genuine engagement with the places and people along the way rather than passage through them.
Highlights
- Visiting Wat Tham Mae On, a working temple set inside a vast limestone cave outside Chiang Mai, was reached on the first day of riding through the rural countryside
- Touring the 700-year-old ruins of Wiang Lo by samlor with local drivers, one of three original northern kingdoms of the region alongside Sukhothai and Chiang Saen
- Crossing the Mekong at Chiang Khong and travelling the full day downriver by slow boat to Pakbeng, the unhurried rhythm of the water marking a clear shift in pace and landscape
- Spending a day on the Nam Ou River near Nong Khiaw, moving by boat before hiking through rice paddies and stream crossings to reach a tiered waterfall system deep in the jungle
- Arriving in Luang Prabang along the final stretch of Nam Ou riverbank through teak plantations, followed by dinner at a vocational training restaurant supporting marginalised youth

Day by day Itinerary
Day 1
Chiang Mai, OrientationArrivals are gathered in the late afternoon at the group hotel within Chiang Mai's Old City. The first hours are practical: an orientation session, time to settle, and for those who arrive earlier in the day, a walking tour of the Old City with stops at the Three Kings Monument, Wat Chedi Luang, and Wat Phra Singh. The evening can include dinner at a small riverside restaurant on the banks of the Ping River, known locally for the quality of its northern Thai cooking and entirely unremarkable from the street.
Day 2
Rural Countryside, Mae On Cave Temple, Pang Hai VillageA short transfer out of the city after breakfast sidesteps the urban morning traffic before the route opens into the rural countryside east of Chiang Mai. Early stops take in a pair of handicraft workshops where traditional northern Thai skills are still practised at a working pace. The day's most striking stop is Wat Tham Mae On, a functioning Buddhist temple built within a massive limestone cave system, its interior lit by natural shafts of light and the smell of incense. From there, the route continues to Pang Hai, a small mountain village where the night is spent in traditional wooden Thai houses. Approximately 42 kilometres.
Day 3
Chae Son National Park, Wat Chaloem Phrakiat, PhayaoThe ride today moves through the interior of Chae Son National Park, where stands of teak and tropical hardwood provide consistent shade, and the road carries almost no traffic. The forest opens eventually to a hillside view of Wat Chaloem Phrakiat Phrachomklao Rachanusorn, a temple of white chedis that appear to float above the treeline when seen from a distance. After time at the temple, a transfer brings the group to a lakeside hotel in Phayao. Approximately 54 kilometres.
Day 4
Wiang Lo Ruins, Teak Temple, Tai Lue Museum, Chiang KhamAnother short morning transfer clears the town before the day's route settles into flat farmland, rice paddies interrupted by small villages at irregular intervals. On reaching Wiang Lo, the group boards samlors driven by village residents to move through the ruins of a settlement that dates back seven centuries. Wiang Lo was one of the three original kingdoms of the north alongside Sukhothai and Chiang Saen, and what remains carries that weight. The afternoon brings the town of Chiang Kham, where Wat Nantaram, constructed entirely from teak, and Wat Phrathat Sob Wean, which houses the museum of the Tai Lue people, are both worth extended time. Approximately 76 kilometres.
Day 5
Phu Sang National Park, Hot Spring Waterfall, Phu Tawan VillageThe day opens flat, moving through rice fields and orchards before reaching Phu Sang National Park. The park holds an unusual feature: a waterfall fed by a hot spring that originates at the top of the mountain, creating warm-water cascades rather than cold ones. Beyond the park, the road begins a long climb into the Phu Chi Fa mountain range, which straddles the Thai-Laos border. The night is spent at U Krit Organic Farm in simple A-frame bungalows, with a traditional Thai-style barbecue prepared outdoors as the light fades across the ridge. Approximately 53 kilometres.
Day 6
Ridge Descent, Ngao River Valley, Mekong, Chiang KhongThe morning follows the ridge before the road begins its long drop into the Ngao River valley, the descent releasing the altitude accumulated over the previous two days. The valley eventually leads north toward the Mekong, and the final kilometres run along the river's bank to Phrathat Doi Mae Ya Mon temple. From the temple, a transfer covers the remaining distance to Chiang Khong, the Thai border town that will serve as the last night in the country.
Day 7
Border Crossing, Mekong Slow Boat, PakbengAfter breakfast the group transfers to the pier for the crossing into Laos at Huay Xai. The Thai guide team departs here. The Mekong downriver journey to Pakbeng takes the full day by slow boat, the river wide and unhurried, the forested banks rising steeply on both sides. A Tiger Trail guide meets the group at the harbour in Pakbeng and accompanies them to riverside accommodation for the night.
Day 8
Hill Tribe Villages, Weaving Communities, OudomxayA one-hour transfer in the morning positions the group at the start of a genuinely remote section of Laos, territory where ethnic minority communities farm the hillsides with limited connection to urban centres. The route passes through villages of Phu Tai, Tai Lu, Hmong, Tai Dam, Lao, and Khamu peoples. Weaving families can be seen at their looms in the shade of their houses, working on traditional handlooms at a domestic rather than commercial pace. A 300-metre pass marks the day's principal climb before a long descent delivers the group to Oudomxai, provincial capital of the province of the same name. Approximately 80 kilometres.
Day 9
Oudomxay to Nong Khiaw, Pak Mong, Elephant Head MountainThe morning begins with a transfer to bypass the opening stretch before the route enters forested terrain. The day is hilly in its first half, demanding consistent effort, but the gradient eases as the route opens into broader valley scenery. A 30-kilometre descent leads to Pak Mong, a small depot town on the valley floor. From there the road continues to Nong Khiaw, situated beneath the limestone formation known as Elephant Head Mountain. Accommodation is riverside, with access to a pool. The day is one of the more physically demanding on the itinerary. Up to 80 kilometres.
Day 10
Nam Ou River Cruise, 100 Waterfalls Trek, Nong KhiawThis is a day without roads. A boat on the Nam Ou River carries the group past a small riverside Lao village before landing at the trailhead. From there, a walking route crosses streams and moves through rice paddies toward the base of the waterfall system locally known as the 100 Waterfalls, a series of cascades descending through dense jungle. Several hours are spent among the falls, with a lunch prepared by the guide in the middle of the cascade system using local ingredients. A trail above the falls leads back down into the valley with views over the Nam Ou, and the return to the village allows further time to observe daily life along the river.
Day 11
Nam Ou River to Road, Nong Khiaw to Luang PrabangA private boat takes the group along the Nam Ou to a point where the road quality and gradient allow a longer day's distance to be completed comfortably. The middle section moves through mountain scenery, with only a few minor passes before the route settles along the Nam Ou riverbank. The final kilometres pass through teak plantations before Luang Prabang comes into view. Dinner is at a restaurant operated by a vocational training programme for marginalised youth, a quietly purposeful end to the journey's longest day on the road. The night market is nearby for those who want to walk after dinner. Approximately 95 kilometres.
Day 12
Kuang Si Falls, Water Buffalo Dairy, Luang PrabangThe final active day begins with a drive of approximately ninety minutes to Kuang Si Falls, where the tiered limestone pools hold turquoise water of unusual clarity and temperature. The return stops at a social enterprise dairy working with water buffalo and the surrounding communities, its focus on animal husbandry, herd health, and dairy production. Cheeses and ice cream made on site are included as part of a picnic lunch before the group returns to Luang Prabang for the last night in the city. Approximately 60 kilometres.
