Option: Baci ceremony – Baci is a specific ceremony in Laos which has been practiced for hundreds of years. The term commonly used is “sou khuan” which means “spirit enhancing or spirit calling”. The ceremony involves the tying of white cotton strings around a person’s wrist and the prayer, saying or well-wishing for the person that the ceremony is intended for.
The BACI ceremony is held on many different occasions or events throughout the year. It can be held any day of the week, though it has to be on a good day in the lunar calendar. These good days are known to the elders, senior monks, or ex-monks. The ceremony can be held for both sad times and happy times.

Day 2
Luang Prabang - Pak Ou caves - Luang PrabangAfter breakfast, your guide and driver will meet you at the hotel continuing to embark at the local pier of Luang Prabang on a traditional boat and cruise upstream on the Mekong River to visit the sacred Buddha caves. On the way stop at Thin Hong-Nestled along Mekong river the villages of Ban Xang Hae and Ban Thing Hong are famous for Lao-Lao the home-made spirit produced from sticky rice. They also referred to us a ”Whiskey Villages” a picturesque village to get a glimpse of daily life. Visit Tham Ting It is known as “Holly Caves” where local people will get together during the water festival or by local passengers/boatmen who travel up and down the Mekong suppose to stop there for short worship for good luck and a short break. They are noted for their impressive Lao style Buddha sculptures assembled over the centuries by local people and pilgrims. Hundreds of mostly wooden Buddhist figures are laid out over the floors and wall shelves. They take many different positions, including meditation, teaching, peace, rain, and reclining (nirvana). Tham Ting contains over 3,000 Buddhas for both the lower and upper cave.
Tham Phoum is a Buddha cave, they have been used for centuries as a repository for old and unwanted Buddha images that can no longer be venerated on an altar and a hundred upon hundreds of severely smiling images covered in dust and cobwebs male an eerie scene.
Caves in which you find hundreds of Buddha statues.
Lunch on boat, and return to Luang Prabang, on the way back stop at Ban Xang Khong, The villages of ban Xang Khong & Ban Xieng Lek have specialized for many years in manufacturing and selling products made from silk and Saa Paper (paper made from the bark of the Saa Tree).
Many ”big” stores have grown in recent years in the neighborhood, but there is also some private little house run by local people who are using looms in the traditional techniques.
There are also 3 magnificent pagodas to be seen (Wat Sang Khong, Wat Nong Sai, Wat Xieng Lek), which are amongst the oldest in Luang Prabang and are made up of beautifully renovated buildings and a stupa (mound-like structure), which has been kept in its original state. In the last temple, lives one of the eldest and most venerable and persons of the town (he is nearly 70 years old, and has been a bonze since the age of 14).
Walking through a village, like in Ban Phanom, you will be amazed at the number of weaving looms. There are many shops here; but also many weavers who only have one skein of yarn. To be able to appreciate the diversity of products, you will have to look at everybody’s goods. The silk all comes from Laos. And so, you will be able to find goods made in Luang Prabang (in the shops there are very few of them), as well as from Vang Vieng, Luang Nam Tha or Sam Neua or China.
Handmade paper village. Drop in the old city visit the TAEC ethnographic museum (closed every Monday) and take a walk or shop at a Hmong market.
Return to your hotel in Luang Prabang.
Day 3
Luang Prabang - Kuangsi - Luang PrabangEnjoy early morning call, when the sunrise, participate in the Tagbat ceremony, the monks’ alms offering. This ritual is an important part of Lao people’s life and offers a memorable experience and great snapshots. Your guide will explain how to follow the strict customs and rules involved. After the ceremony, you will visit a fresh local market. Return to your hotel for breakfast.
After breakfast, your guide and driver will meet you at your hotel and transfer to Kuangsi waterfall-The Kuang Si Falls has 3 tiers leading to a 50-meter drop into shallow pools, before flowing downstream. The pools make great swimming holes and you can change into your swimwear at wooden huts close to the water fall’s entrance. Surrounded by lush tropical jungle, the pools have cascades of up to 5 meters high. If you don’t fancy a swim, you can relax in the shade and watch others having fun jumping in and out of the water. There are trails leading to the top of Kuang Si Falls, where you can see the stream feeding into the falls. Wear proper footwear as the trails can rather get slippery, especially during the wet season. Breathtaking cascades of water make the Kuang Si one of Luang Prabang’s most popular tourist attractions. The journey to the waterfall is worth taking time over, as you’ll be enjoying views of rice fields along the way. A Hmong village where the older female villagers still dress in traditional costumes makes a great place to stop along the way. You can also purchase their handwoven crafts as souvenirs. If you want to take photos of the village, it’s only fair to buy something in return.
The climate at Kuang Si Falls is noticeably cooler, making it a really good place to escape the heat. Children will especially enjoy a day out here playing in the falls. You can spend a relaxing day at the waterfalls by bringing a picnic with you or buying food and drinks from concession stands. There are tables at the front of the lower level pools for you to enjoy your meal. Kuang Si Waterfall is about 29 km south of Luang Prabang. You can rent a motorcycle from the city, though roads can get rather rocky. An easier option is to book a tour, which usually costs around $5 per person. You can also hire a tuk-tuk or take a minibus from Naluang Bus Station.
32 km to the west of Luang Prabang. A short walk through the forest to the waterfall. After enjoying the scenery, take a swim in one of the nearby clear pools. See the Asian bear sanctuary.
After a picnic lunch at Kuangsi continuing visit of the Royal Palace Museum – The Royal Palace Museum of Luang Prabang once served as the residence of King Sisavang Vong and his family during the French colonial era. Designed in the French Beaux-Arts style with many tasteful accents of traditional Lao culture, the palace was converted into a museum in 1995.
The grounds have a number of other buildings, including an exhibition hall, a chapel (Haw Prabang), and a statue of King Sisavangvong. The royal quarters have been faithfully preserved and offer a fascinating glimpse into the lifestyle of the king and his family.
The museum exhibits royal religious objects, weapons, statues, screens, and paintings from centuries past. In the mirrored Throne Hall, you can see the crown jewels of Laos. Make sure you visit the room that features murals depicting Lao life in the 1930s.
The Royal Palace Museums is surrounded by a spacious, well-tended garden just off Thanon Sisavangvong. A pavilion houses the 2,000-year-old Prabang Buddha, which is made from solid gold. There’s a garage containing the last king’s collection of cars. The museum is well worth a couple of hours of your time if you want to learn more about Lao history and culture, housing the most important treasures of Laos’ recent past, continue to Vat Xieng Thong at the tip of the peninsula. The oldest and most beautiful temple of the UNESCO World heritage town dates back from the 16th century. The roof sweep low to the ground and glass colored panels adorn the walls of the chapels; see the residential neighborhoods of the peninsular. The last visit will be at Wat Mai.- or Wat May is a Buddhist temple or wat in Luang Prabang Laos. It is the largest and most richly decorated of the temples in Luang Prabang. Built-in the 18th century, it is near the Royal Palace Museum. An emerald Buddha statue sits inside the red-gold interior.

Day 5
Siem ReapAfter breakfast, your guide and driver will meet you at the hotel and start a full day visit temple by Rework (Tuk Tuk) (02 pax per Tuk Tuk).
Visit the South Gate of Angkor Thom, Angkor Thom South Gate (late 12th-early 13th centuries)Angkor Thom is a quadrangle of defensive walls totaling 12 kilometers that once protected the Khmer capital of the same name (Angkor Thom means ’Great City’). Built-in the late 12th and early 13th centuries by King Jayavarman VII, the walls are divided by two axes running north-south and east-west. A gateway lies at the end of each axis, four in total, facing the four cardinal directions. An additional gate, called the ’Gate of Victory’, pierces the east wall just north of the ’Gate of the Dead’, the east gate along the central axis. The significance of the additional gate is that it provided access to a terrace of the royal palace. As for the other gates, the two axes intersect at the center of the enclosed area where the Bayon temple sits.
The south gate of Angkor Thom is the best preserved. It is approached from outside via a causeway that extends about fifty meters across a moat. On each side of the causeway are railings fashioned with 54 stone figures engaged in the performance of a famous Hindu story: the myth of the Churning of the Ocean. On the left side of the moat, 54 ’devas’ (guardian gods) pull the head of the snake ’Shesha’ while on the right side 54 ’asuras’ (demon gods) pull the snake’s tail in the opposite direction. In this myth, the body of the snake is wrapped around the central mountain—Mt. Meru—perhaps corresponding here to the Bayon temple at the center of the site. In any case, the myth relates that as the Devas pulled the snake in one direction and the gods pushed in the other, the ocean began to churn and precipitate the elements. By alternating back and forth, the ocean was ’milked’, forming the earth and the cosmos anew.
Bayon,- a richly decorated Khmer temple at Angkor in Cambodia. Built-in the late 12th or early 13th century as the state temple of the Mahayana Buddhist King Jayavarman VII the Bayon stands at the center of Jayavarman’s capital, Angkor Thom. Following Jayavarman’s death, it was modified and augmented by later and Theravada Buddhist kings in accordance with their own religious preferences.
The Bayon’s most distinctive feature is the multitude of serene and smiling stone faces on the many towers which jut out from the upper terrace and cluster around its central peak. The temple has two sets of bas-reliefs, which present a combination of mythological, historical, and mundane scenes. The main conservatory body, the Japanese Government Team for the Safeguarding of Angkor (the JSA) has described the temple as ”the most striking expression of the baroque style” of Khmer architecture, as contrasted with the classical style of Angkor Wat.
Baphuon, – aphuon is a beautiful 11th-century “temple-mountain” with steep stairs leading visitors to a terrace that offers one of the best views in the Angkor Archaeological Park. Archaeologists believe that this pyramid-style temple, located within the city of Angkor Thom, was probably among the most impressive of the Angkor temples in its day. Unfortunately, the ravages of time and Mother Nature caused significant damage to this magnificent temple, and it was very nearly lost to history. The tale of how it was restored is just as impressive as the structure itself.
Royal Enclosure, The Royal Enclosure is a walled-off area slightly to the north and west of the center of Angkor Tom and which housed the palace complex of the Angkor kings. The palace itself was constructed of wood so nothing remains except for said surrounding walls which were constructed out of laterite, the sandstone-clad entrance gopuras and some stone-lined bathing pools. The remains as seen today date from the late 12th c. and the reign of Jayavarman VII but kings going back to at least Suryavarman I are thought to have sited their palaces at, or close by to, the site.
Phimeanakas, – Phimeanakas stands close to the center of a walled area that once housed the royal palace. There’s very little left of the palace today except for two sandstone pools near the northern wall. Phimeanakas means ‘Celestial Palace’, and some scholars say that it was once topped by a golden spire. It is currently undergoing restoration and the upper level is off-limits to visitors.
Construction of the palace began under Rajendravarman II, although it was used by Jayavarman V and Udayadityavarman I. It was later added to and embellished by Jayavarman VII and his successors. The royal enclosure is fronted to the east by the Terrace of Elephants. The northwestern wall of the Royal Enclosure is very atmospheric, with immense trees and jungle vines cloaking the outer side, easily visible on a forest walk from Preah Palilay to Phimeanakas.
The temple is another pyramidal representation of Mt Meru, with three levels. Most of the decorative features are broken or have disappeared.
Elephants Terrace – The Terrace of the Elephants is a striking 350-meter-long and 2.5-meter-high ornamental wall which, as the name suggests, is mostly decorated with carved elephants. It was built in the late-12th century as a viewing platform, from which King Jayavarman VII looked over his victorious returning army.
The terrace was once attached to the royal palace of Phimeanakas, right at the heart of the ancient Khmer capital city of Angkor Thom. While much of the original structure has long since rotted and collapsed, the terrace itself has survived relatively intact, and the carvings along its length are still quite clear.
The Terrace of Elephants has five piers extending towards the Central Square – three in the center and one at each end. The middle section of the retaining wall is decorated with life-size garudas and lions; towards either end are the two parts of the famous parade of elephants, complete with their Khmer mahouts. The Terrace of the Leper King is just north of the Terrace of Elephants. Dating from the late 12th century, it is a 7m-high platform, on top of which stands a nude, though sexless, statue. The front retaining walls of the terrace are decorated with at least five tiers of meticulously executed carvings. On the southern side of the Terrace of the Leper King, there is access to a hidden terrace with exquisitely preserved carvings.
The aforementioned statue is yet another of Angkor’s mysteries. The original of the statue is held at Phnom Penh’s National Museum, and various theories have been advanced to explain its meaning. Legend has it that at least two of the Angkor kings had leprosy, and the statue may represent one of them. Another theory – a more likely explanation – is that the statue is of Yama, the god of death and that the Terrace of the Leper King housed the royal crematorium.
The carved walls include seated apsaras, kings, wearing pointed diadems, armed with short double-edged swords and accompanied by the court and princesses, the latter adorned with beautiful rows of pearls.
On the southern side of the Terrace of the Leper King (facing the Terrace of Elephants), there is access to the front wall of a hidden terrace that was covered up when the outer structure was built, a sort of terrace within a terrace. The four tiers of apsaras and other figures, including nagas, look as fresh as if they had been carved yesterday, thanks to being covered up for centuries. Some of the figures carry fearsome expressions. As you follow the inner wall of the Terrace of the Leper King, notice the increasingly rough chisel marks on the figures, an indication that this wall was never completed, like many of the temples at Angkor.
Note: To visit the Baphuon temple in Angkor Thom compound, visitors are required to wear proper attire, covering shoulders and knees to show their culture, respect, as this temple is still considered as a sacrificial site for the Khmer people (no short mini skirt or short trousers).
Lunch at a local restaurant, continuing to visit Ta Prohm Temple – The so-called ’Tomb Raider Temple’, Ta Prohm is cloaked in dappled shadow, its crumbling towers and walls locked in the slow muscular embrace of vast root systems. Undoubtedly the most atmospheric ruin at Angkor, Ta Prohm should be high on the hit list of every visitor. Its appeal lies in the fact that, unlike the other monuments of Angkor, it has been swallowed by the jungle, and looks very much the way most of the monuments of Angkor appeared when European explorers first stumbled upon them. Well, that’s the theory, but in fact, the jungle is pegged back and only the largest trees are left in place, making it manicured rather than raw like Beng Mealea. Still, a visit to Ta Prohm is a unique, other-worldly experience. There is a poetic cycle to this venerable ruin, with humanity first conquering nature to rapidly create, and nature once again conquering humanity to slowly destroy. If Angkor Wat is a testimony to the genius of the ancient Khmers, Ta Prohm reminds us equally of the awesome fecundity and power of the jungle.
Built from 1186 and originally known as Rajavihara (Monastery of the King), Ta Prohm was a Buddhist temple dedicated to the mother of Jayavarman VII. It is one of the few temples in the Angkor region where an inscription provides information about the temple’s dependents and inhabitants. Almost 80,000 people were required to maintain or attend the temple, among them more than 2700 officials and 615 dancers.
Ta Prohm is a temple of towers, closed courtyards, and narrow corridors. Many of the corridors are impassable, clogged with jumbled piles of delicately carved stone blocks dislodged by the roots of long-decayed trees. Bas-reliefs on bulging walls are carpeted with lichen, moss and creeping plants, and shrubs sprout from the roofs of monumental porches. Trees, hundreds of years old, tower overhead, their leaves filtering the sunlight and casting a greenish pall over the whole scene.
The most popular of the many strangulating root formations is the one on the inside of the easternmost gopura (entrance pavilion) of the central enclosure, nicknamed the Crocodile Tree. One of the most famous spots in Ta Prohm is the so-called ‘Tomb Raider tree’, where Angelina Jolie’s Lara Croft picked a jasmine flower before falling through the earth into…Pinewood Studios.
It used to be possible to climb onto the damaged galleries, but this is now prohibited, to protect both temple and visitor. Many of these precariously balanced stones weigh a tonne or more and would do some serious damage if they came down. Ta Prohm is currently under stabilization and restoration by an Indian team of archaeologists working with their Cambodian counterparts.
The temple is at its most impressive early in the day. Allow as much as two hours to visit, especially if you want to explore the maze-like corridors and iconic tree roots. Angkor Wat temple – built by Suryavarman II (r 1112–52) – is the earthly representation of Mt Meru, the Mt Olympus of the Hindu faith and the abode of ancient gods. The Cambodian god-kings of old each strove to better their ancestors’ structures in size, scale, and symmetry, culminating in what is believed to be the world’s largest religious building.
The temple is the heart and soul of Cambodia and a source of fierce national pride. Unlike the other Angkor monuments, it was never abandoned to the elements and has been in virtually continuous use since it was built.
Symbolically, west is the direction of death, which once led a large number of scholars to conclude that Angkor Wat must have existed primarily as a tomb. This idea was supported by the fact that the magnificent bas-reliefs of the temple were designed to be viewed in an anticlockwise direction, a practice that has precedents in ancient Hindu funerary rites. Vishnu, however, is also frequently associated with the west, and it is now commonly accepted that Angkor Wat most likely served both as a temple and as a mausoleum for Suryavarman II.
Celestial nymphs – Angkor Wat is famous for having more than 3000 beguiling apsaras (heavenly nymphs) carved into its walls. Each of them is unique, and there are 37 different hairstyles for budding stylists to check out. Many of these exquisite apsaras were damaged during efforts to clean the temples with chemicals during the 1980s, but they are being restored by the teams with the German Apsara Conservation Project. Bat urine and droppings also degrade the restored carvings over time.
Visitors to Angkor Wat are struck by its imposing grandeur and, at close quarters, its fascinating decorative flourishes. Stretching around the outside of the central temple complex is an 800m-long series of intricate and astonishing bas-reliefs – carvings depicting historical events and stories from mythology. The biggest and best-preserved of the Angkor monuments lies six kilometers outside of Siem Reap and is a magnificent example of ancient architecture. It features balanced proportions and intricate bas-reliefs and is one of the worlds!s most celebrated monuments. This funerary temple was allegedly built as a mini replica of the entire universe and the pillars, reliefs, and carvings entice curious travelers from all over the world.
Note: To visit the Bakan tower of Angkor Wat temple, visitors are required to wear proper attire, covering shoulders and knees to show their culture, respect, as this temple is still considered as a sacrificial site for the Khmer people (no short mini skirt or short trousers). Children under twelve years old are restricted not to climb up the tower. The tower will be closed on the Buddhist Sabbath Days, the Buddhist religious days and four days a month in accordance with the Lunar Calendar. (To climb to Bakan tower, is now allowed only 100 people per time, so visitors have to queue the line)
Return to your hotel in Siem Reap
Day 6
Siem ReapAfter breakfast, your guide and driver will meet you at the hotel and enjoy a boat trip on the Tonle Sap Lake – Tonle Sap Lake is the largest freshwater lake in Southeast Asia. Also called Boeung Tonle Sap, it has one of the world’s most vibrant ecosystems. There are different species of wildlife in and around the lake, which helped to sustain and grow the ancient Khmer civilization. It’s also famous for its fascinating local communities and their floating villages.
Located in Siem Reap, the massive lake is 250 km in length and 100 km across at its widest point, making it seem like an inland ocean because it is impossible to see the opposite shore from ground level. Surprisingly, it’s fairly shallow, with a maximum depth of only 10 meters.
There are several so-called floating villages in and around Tonle Sap Lake and they are all somewhat different. Naturally, many of these villages depend on the lake for the natural resources it provides, and explore the floating village.
Note High-Level Water Season (August-February) /Low-Level Water Season (March-July).
After enjoying leisure lunch we are continuing to visit ”Les Artisans d’Angkor” which provides training to young Cambodians in an effort to revive the ancient Khmer traditions of stone-carving and wood-sculpting.
If time permits, visit “Les Senteurs d’Angkor” on your way to the airport for some last-minute shopping for your friends and relatives, as this is a Community Project allowing Cambodian women a steady activity to alleviate their family from the cycle of poverty.
