Laos: Caves, Highlands & War History Journey
Summary
This five-day journey moves through some of Laos's least-visited interior, from the Xieng Khouang highlands to the karst corridors of Khammouane Province. The route passes Hmong and Khmu villages, a wartime airstrip still marked on Cold War maps, and the megalithic plateau of the Plain of Jars. It ends inside Kong Lor Cave, where a navigable river runs for seven and a half kilometres through a limestone mountain. The pacing is deliberate. Each stop has its own historical or geographic weight, and the distances between them are part of what makes the itinerary coherent.

Day by day Itinerary
Day 1
A Mountain Journey — Luang Prabang to PhonsavanThe route south from Luang Prabang follows Route 13 into the Xieng Khouang highlands, where the road climbs through forested ridgelines and opens onto long views across the plateau. Along the way, the itinerary includes a stop in one of the Hmong villages that sit close to the road, communities that have occupied these highlands for generations. The day's most historically significant pause is at Muang Sui, a quiet town that held particular strategic weight during the Indochina War. This was Lima Site L-108, the last position of the Nationalist Lao Army and the CIA's Air America operation before evacuation. The runway remains visible, and several abandoned structures still stand nearby. In the area surrounding Muang Sui, Buddhist temples and caves that served as shelters and field hospitals during the war years can be visited. The day ends with arrival in Phonsavan.
Day 2
Phonsavan and the Plain of JarsThe morning begins at the Phonsavan local market, a useful introduction to the texture of daily life in this highland provincial town. Before reaching the plain itself, the route includes a visit to an exhibit documenting the range of ordnance dropped on this region during the Indochina War — context that shapes how the landscape is read throughout the day. The Plain of Jars is one of Southeast Asia's most distinctive archaeological sites, a plateau scattered with hundreds of carved stone vessels whose origins and purpose remain incompletely understood. Sites 1, 2, and 3 have been cleared of unexploded ordnance and are accessible; other areas of the plain remain off-limits due to the significant UXO contamination that persists across Xieng Khouang Province. The afternoon returns to Phonsavan.
Day 3
Phonsavan to Nahin, via Lak SaoToday the journey turns south, leaving the highland plateau and descending through Khammouane Province toward the limestone country near Kong Lor Cave. The route passes through Khmu villages, communities with a distinct cultural identity from the Hmong settlements encountered in the north. The market town of Lak Sao, a busy junction point in this part of the interior, provides a further stop before the road approaches the karst formations surrounding Kong Lor. The night is spent near the cave, in a setting defined by the limestone mountains that rise steeply from the valley floor.
Day 4
Kong Lor Cave and the Hin Boun National Protected AreaAn early departure makes the most of the light before the cave entrance. Kong Lor is a river cave of unusual scale: the Hin Bun River flows through the mountain for seven and a half kilometres, navigable by longboat for its entire length. Headlamps illuminate the interior, chambers of stalactites and stalagmites that have formed across a timescale difficult to hold in mind. The river emerges on the far side into a valley enclosed by the same limestone walls. A picnic within the Hin Boun National Protected Area follows the cave passage. The afternoon allows time in the village and the surrounding area. In the rainy season, when water levels permit, a trek to Nam Sanam waterfall is possible.
Day 5
Kong Lor to VientianeThe final day covers the distance from Khammouane Province to the capital. The drive is substantial, moving from the interior karst country back toward the Mekong corridor. Arrival in Vientiane is in the afternoon. Accommodation in the capital falls outside the programme and is arranged independently.
