This twelve-day journey traces the historic Ho Chi Minh Trail from Hanoi southward through central Vietnam, across the Lao border, and down through the remote provinces of southern Laos before returning to Vietnam and finishing in Ho Chi Minh City. The route connects landscapes that shaped twentieth-century history: imperial citadels and pagodas on the Perfume River, the contested A Shau Valley, the Khe Sanh plateau, and the quiet Lao countryside where the Trail ran deepest and longest. In Laos, the journey moves through Xepon, Saravane, Tad Lo, Sekong, and Attapeu before crossing back over the Truong Son Range into the Central Highlands of Vietnam. The days are physically demanding and the distances are real. What sustains the effort is the quality of what the route reveals: a continuous thread of landscape, memory, and gradual change that no single destination could provide.

Day by day Itinerary
Day 1
Hanoi to HueArrive in Hanoi and spend the day at your own pace in the city. In the evening a private transfer collects you and delivers you to the station for the overnight train south to Hue. The train journey itself is a quiet transition between the capital and the former imperial seat, and by morning the landscape outside the window has shifted considerably.
Day 2
Hue to A LuoiA private bus collects you from Hue before nine in the morning. The city carries a particular weight of history: it was the seat of royal power for over a century, and it bore the full force of the 1968 Tet Offensive. After approximately an hour's transfer, the route moves onto the first section of the historic Ho Chi Minh Trail. The landscape here is dense with forest and largely quiet now, though the surrounding area around A Luoi was among the most fought-over ground of the entire war. Hamburger Hill is visible in the distance, the site of a ten-day battle in 1969 later documented in film. A short detour to the hill can be arranged for those who want it. Overnight in A Luoi.
Day 3
A Luoi to Khe SanhThe morning route follows the A Shau Valley northward. The valley was a critical entry corridor from Laos into South Vietnam and fed operations in and around Hue for years. The early section passes through rural villages with open views across the hills. After around twenty kilometres the route diverts off-road to Long Hill Pass, a forested ridge with wide views over the surrounding mountains. Fresh fruit and cold drinks are available at the summit. The descent follows the river back to A Luoi town. In the afternoon a shorter fifteen-kilometre section moves through quieter countryside before a bus transfer carries you to Khe Sanh, where the local museum documents the siege of 1968, one of the most closely watched engagements of the war.
Day 4
Khe Sanh to Lao Bao Border to XeponToday involves no physical exertion on the road. A private vehicle follows Route 9 westward toward the Lao border at Lao Bao. The road dates to the French colonial period and later became the corridor for Operation Lam Son 719 in 1971, when South Vietnamese forces attempted to sever the Trail with American logistical and aerial support. The crossing into Laos marks a clear change in atmosphere. The Lao support team meets you at the border. The transfer continues to Xepon via Ban Dong, both areas that saw sustained fighting during the war years. The countryside now is unhurried and green. In the afternoon there is a visit to the UXO centre in Xepon, where staff explain the scale and method of the unexploded ordnance clearance programme still operating across the region. The impact of the nine-year bombing campaign on the land and its people remains a present reality.
Day 5
Xepon to Tad LoThis is the longest and most demanding day of the journey. After breakfast the route heads south into rural Laos through forested hills and occasional villages. The first significant settlement is Muang Nong, on the banks of the Nam Se Lanong. The route continues south along the Ho Chi Minh Trail corridor to Muang Ta Oy before a van transfer through Saravane, a town that was heavily affected by the war. This is a remote part of the country and the distance and terrain require a full day's effort. The evening ends at Tad Lo Lodge, where a measure of traditional Lao Lao spirit is a customary acknowledgement of the day's achievement.
Day 6
Tad Lo to SekongThe morning begins early at the waterfalls near the lodge, where it is possible to swim before the day's journey starts. The route moves to Sekong, a provincial capital established in the 1980s and situated on the banks of the Sekong River. The province has a low population density but considerable ethnic complexity, with fourteen distinct groups recorded across the region. The day through Sekong province is unhurried and the landscape is largely undisturbed. In the evening there is an opportunity to try local food and Lao Hai, a communal jar-fermented spirit that is a fixture of Lao social gatherings.
Day 7
Sekong to AttapeuThe day begins at dawn with a departure by local three-person fishing boat. The river route to Attapeu is slow and open, passing at least one riverside village along the way. The boats are open-topped and the sun on the water is direct, so appropriate clothing and sun protection are necessary. The vans rejoin the group at Don Chan for a riverside lunch. An optional twenty-five-kilometre section continues by river to Xakhe if time and conditions permit. From Xakhe it is thirty kilometres by road to Attapeu, a town on the confluence of the Sekong and Xe Kaman rivers.
Day 8
Attapeu to Dak ToThis crossing back into Vietnam is one of the most memorable sections of the entire route. Attapeu sits in the lowland river plain and the road east toward the Bo Y border rises steadily into the Truong Son Range. The mountain terrain here is understood locally as the Roof of Laos: high ridgelines, deep forested valleys, and very few other travellers. The Vietnamese representative meets the group at the border and transfers you to Dak To, the site of a former American airbase and several significant battles in 1967. Dinner with the group at Dak To marks the return to Vietnam and closes the Lao chapter of the journey.
Day 9
Dak To to PleikuAn early breakfast precedes a visit to the former US Phoenix Airfield followed by Rocket Ridge, a long escarpment where American forces constructed a series of fire bases to monitor and disrupt movement along the Trail. The route to Pleiku descends through a wide valley enclosed by mountains, passing tea and coffee plantations along the way. There are opportunities to stop at Jarai and Bhanar minority villages, where the communal longhouses with their distinctive steep rooflines are a deliberate expression of regional identity. Pleiku itself was a significant American airbase and the target of an early 1975 assault that tested whether the United States would re-enter the conflict. It did not, and the subsequent campaign moved quickly.
Day 10
Pleiku to Buon Ma ThuotThe route today follows ground that carried decisive weight in 1975. The region became central to the Battle of Buon Ma Thuot in March of that year, and the fall of the city directly preceded the Ho Chi Minh Campaign and the end of the war. The first thirty kilometres move through rolling hills, coffee plantations, and small villages. The route then turns onto a quieter backroad that runs for twenty-five kilometres through rubber plantations backed by low hills. The final approach to Buon Ma Thuot is through farms and villages on a narrowing rural road. A short transfer of six kilometres completes the journey into town.
Day 11
Buon Ma Thuot to Dong XoaiAn early bus departure from Buon Ma Thuot moves south through the plantation country of the Central Highlands. The corridor here ran close to the Cambodian border and was among the final operational sections of the Ho Chi Minh Trail. Stops through the day include rubber, pepper, coffee, and curry plantations. The landscape becomes denser and more varied as the route descends toward the lowlands. The evening arrives in Dong Xoai.
Day 12
Dong Xoai to Cu Chi to Ho Chi Minh CityThe final section of the Trail ends at Chon Thanh, where a monument at the crossroads in front of the People's Committee marks the southern terminus of the Truong Son supply network. The significance of arriving here on the road rather than by other means is not incidental. A three-hour transfer then continues to Cu Chi, where the tunnel complex built and used by Viet Cong fighters during the war is now open to visitors. The tunnels are narrow and the experience of entering them is direct. After Cu Chi the journey continues by road into Ho Chi Minh City, where the trail concludes on arrival at the hotel.
