Impressions of Laos: Vientiane to Pakse by Road & River
Summary
This ten-day overland journey moves through the less-traveled interior of Laos before descending to the southern Mekong. The route begins in Vientiane and travels east into Bolikhamxay Province, where the Hinboun River has carved one of Southeast Asia's most remarkable underground passages through seven and a half kilometers of karst limestone. From Kong Lor the road turns south through Khammouane Province, pausing at a pair of 16th-century stupas that remain active centers of regional pilgrimage. Savannakhet introduces the French colonial south, and from there the journey rises onto the Bolaven Plateau, where cooler temperatures and volcanic soil sustain the arabica and robusta plantations that defined the region's agricultural character under French administration. The descent through Champasak leads to Vat Phou, a Khmer complex predating Angkor in its earliest construction. The journey ends among the river islands of Si Phan Don on the Cambodian border.

Day by day Itinerary
Day 1
Vientiane to Khoun KhamDeparture from Vientiane takes place in the morning, with the overland route heading east toward Paksan and then deeper into Bolikhamxay Province. Two temple stops break the journey. Wat Phra Baht, 70 kilometers east of the capital, is organized around a large Buddha footprint shrine and serves as an established pilgrimage destination for communities across Bolikhamxay and Vientiane provinces. Wat Phonsan stands on the Mekong riverside two kilometers away.
Though the two temples are geographically separate, their histories are intertwined through local legend, and the pair is traditionally referred to as a single site under the name Wat Phabatphonsan. The day covers 320 kilometers and approximately six hours of driving before arrival in Khoun Kham, the base for the following day's cave visit.
Day 2
Kong Lor CaveTham Kong Lor is the organizing event of this day. The cave was formed by the Hinboun River, which continues to flow through it, and extends for seven and a half kilometers through the karst interior. The main passage reaches up to 90 meters in width and 100 meters in height. The visit proceeds by boat along the underground river, moving through chambers defined by significant rock formations before emerging into an open valley on the far side.
The afternoon allows time to photograph the cave's exterior landscape and, if the day's schedule permits, to walk through nearby rural villages as light fades. A hike to a waterfall close to Nahin is possible depending on timing. The night is spent again in Khoun Kham.
Day 3
Khoun Kham to ThakhekThe route turns southeast, covering 190 kilometers over roughly three and a half hours to reach Thakhek in Khammouane Province. Two stops define the approach to town. The Giant Wall, known locally as Khampheng Yak, stands eight kilometers outside Thakhek and marks an early introduction to the province's layered historical character. That Sikhottabong Stupa, on the east bank of the Mekong south of Thakhek, is the most significant cultural and religious site in south-central Laos. The stupa dates to the 16th century, and its importance extends across the river, where cultural connections with sites in Thailand reflect centuries of cross-Mekong exchange. The regional Sikhottabong festival in February draws pilgrims from across Laos. Arrival is in the afternoon, with overnight in Thakhek.
Day 4
Thakhek to SavannakhetThe overland journey continues south through Seno to Savannakhet, the provincial capital, approximately 170 kilometers and three hours from Thakhek. That Ing Hang Stupa, located in the province, is a nine-meter structure with detailed carving and decoration. It is reported to house a relic of Buddha's spine and draws worshippers from both Laos and northern Thailand. Appropriate dress is required for the visit, with traditional phasin available near the site.
The afternoon includes the Dinosaur Museum on Khantabouli Road, which holds fossils excavated from 1930 to the present, among them remains of four distinct dinosaur species, early mammalian specimens from roughly 200 million years ago, and fragments of a meteorite. The French Quarter of central Savannakhet provides a coherent setting for an evening walk along the Mekong Riverfront.
Day 5
Savannakhet to Tad LoThe drive southwest from Savannakhet toward the Bolaven Plateau covers 260 kilometers and takes between five and six hours. An early stop is made at Hor Tay Phidok Library, south of Savannakhet. The building dates originally to the 17th century. It holds the most significant collection of palm leaf manuscripts in Laos, comprising 4,000 books across 361 distinct texts written in Burmese Pali, Khmer, and ancient Lao scripts. The books are maintained by monks, novices, and members of the surrounding community. Arrival in Tad Lo is in the late afternoon, with accommodation near the Tad Lo waterfall.
Day 6
Tad Lo, Bolaven Plateau, and PaksongThe Bolaven Plateau carries a particular agricultural history. During the colonial period, the French encouraged cultivation of both Arabica and Robusta coffee at altitude, taking advantage of the plateau's cooler temperatures and high rainfall. Production contracted during the war years but has since recovered.
The day moves through this landscape, visiting coffee and tea plantations and tasting the regional product in its place of origin. The plateau also supports considerable ethnic diversity, with the Laven group predominant. The road between Pakse and Paksong along the western edge of the plateau passes several waterfalls, including Tad Fane, the highest in Champasak Province, and the adjacent Tad Yuang. The night is spent in Paksong.
Day 7
Paksong to Don Khong via Champasak and Vat PhouThe day begins with a descent from the plateau into the Mekong plain. Champasak town retains a visible layer of French colonial architecture and warrants time on foot before the group continues south to Vat Phou.
The complex is among the oldest archaeological sites in Laos. One structure on the site dates to approximately the 5th century, while the majority of standing buildings were raised between the 11th and 13th centuries, making the site contemporaneous with the broader Khmer architectural tradition of the period. Construction used sandstone, laterite, and brick. Surviving carvings include representations of Indra mounted on a three-headed elephant and Vishnu on a garuda. From Vat Phou the route continues south to Don Khong, the largest of the islands in Si Phan Don, for the overnight.
Day 8
Don Khong to Don Khone via Si Phan DonAn early start allows time in the Si Phan Don island system, where the Mekong spreads across a wide seasonal floodplain that produces thousands of small islands during the dry months. The area's character is defined by low-density rural settlement, with wooden stilt houses, working farmland, and livestock moving through open space. Don Khone and Don Det are the primary islands for visitors; the two are connected by a bridge from the French colonial era. Don Khone, closer to the Cambodian border at roughly one kilometer, is less developed than Don Det.
The Irrawaddy dolphin, increasingly rare in the Mekong system, can occasionally be observed in this stretch of river. Li Phi Waterfall, also known as Khone Phasoy, is a named site within the islands. Its local name reflects two distinct associations: the waterfall's action as a natural fish trap, and the danger it presents to any attempt at navigation. The movement between islands is by boat, covering approximately 25 kilometers over two hours. The overnight is on Don Khone.
Day 9
Don Khone to Pakse via Khone PhaphengThe morning begins with a crossing of the Mekong to reach Khone Phapheng, 13 kilometers from the Cambodian border on the eastern side of Don Khone. The waterfall is the largest in Southeast Asia by water volume. The Mekong descends across a wide fault line in a curvilinear pattern, generating sufficient force and descent to render this section of the river unnavigable. South of the falls, the river resumes its composed course into Cambodia and Vietnam. After time at the falls, the journey turns north toward Pakse, where the overnight is taken before the following day's departure.
