HANOI – FULL DAYAfter breakfast, your guide and driver will meet you at the hotel and start a full-day city tour.
Visit Ho Chi Minh’s Mausoleum and his former residence, one of the most resourceful museums in Hanoi and undoubtedly in the country, The Ho Chi Minh museum is conveniently located in the Ho Chi Minh complex. The whole museum is an elaborate description of Ho Chi Minh’s life, with 8 chronological topics. The first one, from 1890 to 1910 modeled after his upbringing, hometown, and youth. The second topic concerns the next ten years when Ho Chi Minh traveled the world, to find a way to rescue the country from colonialism.
The next three topics, covering 1920-1945, depicted how Ho Chi Minh had translated the influence of Marxism and Leninism ideals into founding the Vietnamese Communist Party and striving for national independence. From 1945 to 1969, which was the time frame portrayed in topics 6 and 7, the national hero was primarily discussed in his political life, up until his pathway.
What guide book does not tell you about the Ho Chi Minh Museum
Opposite to Ho Chi Minh Museum is a local market, taking place in a small alley, visible from the entrance to the Museum. If you want to separate yourself from the tourist crowd, head to the market. There are a lot of food options on offer, from the famous Pho (Vietnamese noodles) and Che (Vietnamese pudding) to baguettes and other local fairs. Not only will you get a lunch deal, compared to what you would pay in the Old Quarter, but you will also have the unique chance to communicate with the “real” local.
The One-pillar pagoda or Dien Huu pagoda has one of the most special architectures in Vietnam. The pagoda started being constructed under the Ly's dynasty in 1049. The legend goes that one night in 1049, King Ly Thai Tong dreamed of the Holy Lady (Phat ba Quan Am) sitting on a lotus and leading him to a similar building. When he woke up, he was advised by the Thien Tue monk to build the pillar-based pagoda-like in his dream and top it with the lotus of the Holy lady. Every year, when it came to April 8th in the Lunar calendar, the King came to the pagoda for the Buddha bathing ceremony and afterward, released a bird. In 1105, King Ly Nhan Tong extended the pagoda and added the Linh Chieu bond. However, time has erased everything but a limited area like what we see now. Near the pagoda, there’s a bodhi tree. This is the gift from Rajendra Prasad- Indian president to Ho Chi Minh President. The pagoda now became one of the most meaningful symbols of Hanoi.
Temple of Literature; was constructed in 1070, under Ly Thanh Tong’s dynasty, first to honor Confucius and nowadays to celebrate the doctorates and high-rank scholars of Vietnam. In 1076, King Ly Nhan Tong continued the work and built Quoc Tu Giam, as the first university of Vietnam. The temple is divided into five courtyards, each with its own significance and history. The first courtyard stretches from the main gate to the Dai Trung gate; the second stands out with the Khue Van Cac pavilion. If you notice well, you will find the pavilion symbol on all street signs of Hanoi. The third courtyard is where doctors' names were listed on a tombstone, above tortoise backs. There is a total of 82 tombstones, with names and origins of 1307 doctors, corresponding to 82 examination courses, from 1442 to 1779. If you visit the temple at the beginning of the year or in May, when many important examinations take place, you will catch sight of numerous students who come and rub the tortoise's head. Such an act is believed to bring them luck to pass the test. The fourth courtyard is dedicated to Confucius and his 72 honored students, as well as Chu Van An- a famous teacher, known for his devotion to teaching. This is also where local authorities choose to cherish brilliant students in Hanoi, like those with top entrance results to universities or top graduation outcomes. The last and also furthest courtyard is the Thai Hoc house, which used to be Quoc Tu Giam- the first university of Vietnam. Thai Hoc households a small collection of old-time costumes for students and mandarins, as well as explaining the process of taking and passing the national examination.
If you are keen on architecture, the Temple of literature has one of the most typical architecture styles for centuries in Vietnam, composed of wood and tiles. Along the pathway are hundred-year-old trees that have witnessed the ups and downs of history.
Late in the afternoon, take the panoramic cyclo tour (1 hour) around the Old Quarter of Hanoi and Ngoc Son Temple was built in commemoration of the 13th-century military leader Tran Hung Dao who was renowned for his bravery in the battle against the Yuan Dynasty. Homage is also paid to scholar Van Xuong and Confucian master Nguyen Van Sieu. The island on which the temple is built is known as Jade Island and is accessible by the iconic Huc Bridge or Rising Sun Bridge, which is a charming scarlet-painted wooden bridge of classical Vietnamese design. The pagoda is also guarded by two towering posts decorated with Chinese writing. The lake and temple are probably the most famous places in Hanoi city in which to rest and enjoy the view and are a great place to sit back and watch the locals.
Lunch at a local restaurant
Evening: Enjoy the water puppet show at the Thang Long theater, the unique Vietnamese traditional art. The traditional content of water puppet performances like the daily life of Vietnamese farmers (cultivating, tending buffalo, catching fish), communal entertainment (swimming contest, dragon dancing), or historical legends (Le Loi returns precious sword), with modest performances, which have appealed to audiences for centuries. However, the artists of Thang Long Water Puppet Theater want to renew the old puppet show with the effect of light, music, and a combination between people and puppets. This art originates from rural festivals in Vietnam. The artists-men and women-stand waist-deep in the water to manipulate the puppets, making them move about, talk and laugh, and even dance on the water's surface.
Transfer to the hotel at the end of the show.
Day 3
HANOI – NINH BINHAfter breakfast, your guide and driver will meet you at the hotel and depart to Ninh Binh (a 2-hour drive), located 100km from Hanoi, with a very wide range of species, both flowers, and animals. Moreover, it is one of the best places for hiking in Vietnam. Take a sampan ride to Tam Coc, also known as “Halong-on-land”, limestone rocks rising from rice fields, forming a landscape similar to Guilin, in China. Tam Coc is best appreciated on a languorous rowing-boat ride, with the soundtrack of the river lapping against the oars.
Lunch at a local restaurant.
In the afternoon, visit Bich Dong Pagoda, dating from the 17th century, and the Temples of King Dinh and King Le. Being a land bestowed by nature with many majestic beauties as well as a long history, Ninh Binh is always the first choice for many visitors when coming to Vietnam. Arriving in Ninh Binh, you will be surprised by the extremely natural landscape with the continuous rolling mountains, and endless green forests seeming endless. Not only known as a place with Vietnam's architectural style, but the Bich Dong Pagoda is also a place associated with many legends from ancient times. Built on Truong Yen limestone mountain range in Ninh Hai commune, Hoa Lu district, Ninh Binh province, this is a historical and cultural relic belonging to the Trang An Tam Coc scenic complex. Bich Dong has been classified as a special national monument and a UNESCO world heritage site.
