Day by day Itinerary
Day 1
HANOI ARRIVALYour driver will meet you at Hanoi-Noi Bai International Airport, and transfer you to the hotel.
City tour (time permitting, depending on arrival time):
As the capital of Vietnam, Hanoi is home to a large number of must-see attractions. Museums and pagodas scatter the city and Hoan Kiem Lake serves as the center point to reach just anywhere. Hanoi Old Quarter, the cultural, dining, entertainment, and shopping heart of the city are worth the majority of your time to discover.
Temple of Literature, was constructed in 1070 under Ly Thanh Tong’s dynasty, first to honor Confucius and nowadays to celebrate the doctorates and high-rank scholars of Vietnam. In 1076, King Ly Nhan Tong continued the work and built Quoc Tu Giam as the first university of Vietnam. The temple is divided into five courtyards, each with its own significance and history. The first courtyard stretches from the main gate to Dai Trung gate; the second stands out with the Khue Van Cac pavilion. If you notice well, you will find the pavilion symbol on all street signs of Hanoi. The third courtyard is where doctor names were listed on a tombstone above tortoise backs.
There is a total of 82 tombstones, with names and origins of 1307 doctors, corresponding to 82 examination courses from 1442 to 1779. If you visit the temple at the beginning of the year or in May when many important examinations take place, you will catch sight of numerous students who come and rub the tortoise's head. Such an act is believed to bring them luck to pass the test.
The fourth courtyard is dedicated to Confucius and his 72 honored students, as well as Chu Van An- a famous teacher known for his devotion to teaching. This is also where local authorities choose to cherish brilliant students in Hanoi, like those with top entrance results to universities' top graduation outcomes. The last and also furthest courtyard is the Thai Hoc house, which used to be Quoc Tu Giam- the first university of Vietnam. Thai Hoc households a small collection of old-time costumes for students and mandarins, as well as explaining the process of taking and passing the national examination.
If you are keen on architecture, the Temple of literature has one of the most typical architecture styles for centuries in Vietnam, composed of wood and tiles. Along the pathway are hundred-year-old trees that have witnessed up and downs of history.
Fine Arts Museum (closed on Mondays. If Day 1 falls on a Monday it will be replaced with another site) was built in the 1930s as a Girl School for Indochina high-ranked officers. In 1966, it officially became Vietnam Fine Arts Museum which stores many Vietnamese artistic essences.
The museum displays not only paintings, ceramics, and lacquers created by modern Post-war artists, but many of its contents date back as far as pre-historic and feudalism times.
Unfortunately, many of the artworks found here are, replicated in the original has by and large been destroyed during the Viet Nam war. It is worth heading here after you have visited the Temple of Literature.
Quan Thanh Temple is a Taoist temple built during the Ly Dynasty (1010-1225) and can be found in Hanoi. They built this place to honor ‘Tran Vo’ the ‘God of the North’ who was beloved by all local Taoists and used the tortoise and snake as symbols of power. The name Quan Thanh, therefore, resembles the temple’s meaning as it translates to ‘Place of the Gods’. To protect Hanoi from bad spirits and influences they built four sacred temples in the four wind directions of the city of which Quan Thach temple is the protector of the North. The other three temples are Bach Ma (East), Kim Liem (South), and Than Linh Lang (West). A true masterpiece that you will find in this temple is the four-meter tall bronze statue of Tran Vu holding a snake and tortoise. In Vietnamese animal symbolism, the snake stands for wealth and the tortoise for protection.
In the evening, enjoy the water puppet show at Thang Long theatre, the unique Vietnamese traditional art. The traditional content of water puppet performances like the daily life of Vietnamese farmers (cultivating, tending buffalo, catching fish…), communal entertainment (swimming contest, dragon dancing…), or historical legends (Le Loi returns precious sword…), with modest performance way, have appealed audiences for centuries. However, the artists of Thang Long Water Puppet Theater want to renew the old puppet shows with the effect of light, music, and a combination between people and puppets. This art originates from rural festivals in Vietnam. The artists-men and women-stand waist-deep in the water to manipulate the puppets, making them move about, talk and laugh, and even dance on the water's surface.

Visit Ho Chi Minh’s Mausoleum and his former residence, one of the most resourceful museums in Hanoi and undoubtedly in the country, Ho Chi Minh Museum is conveniently located in the Ho Chi Minh complex. The whole museum is an elaborate description of Ho Chi Minh’s life, with 8 chronological topics. The first one, from 1890 to 1910 modeled after his upbringing, hometown, and youth. The second topic concerns the next ten years when Ho Chi Minh traveled the world to find out a way to rescue the country from colonialism.
The next three topics, covering 1920-1945, depicted how Ho Chi Minh had translated the influence of Marxism and Leninism ideals into founding the Vietnamese Communist Party and striving for national independence. From 1945 to 1969, which was the time frame portrayed in topics 6 and 7, the national hero was primarily discussed in his political life up to his passing away.
What guide book does not tell you about the Ho Chi Minh Museum
Opposite to Ho Chi Minh Museum is a local market, taking place in a small alley visible from the entrance to the Museum. If you want to separate yourself from the tourist crowd, head to the market. There are a lot of food options on offer, from the famous Pho (Vietnamese noodles) and Che (Vietnamese pudding) to baguettes and other local fares. Not only will you get a lunch deal, compared with what you would pay in the Old Quarter, but you will also have the unique chance to communicate with the “real” local.
The One-pillar pagoda or Dien Huu pagoda has one of the most special architectures in Vietnam. The pagoda started being constructed under the Ly’s dynasty in 1049. The legend goes that one night in 1049, King Ly Thai Tong dreamed of the Holy Lady (Phat ba Quan Am) sitting on a lotus and leading him to a similar building.
When he woke up, he was advised by the Thien Tue monk to build the pillar-based pagoda-like in his dream and top it with the lotus of the Holy lady. Every year when it came to April 8th in the Lunar calendar, the King came to the pagoda for the Buddha bathing ceremony and afterward, released a bird.
In 1105, King Ly Nhan Tong extended the pagoda and added the Linh Chieu bond. However, time has erased everything but the limited area like what we see now. Near the pagoda, there’s a bodhi tree. This is the gift from Rajendra Prasad- the Indian president to the Ho Chi Minh President.
The pagoda now became one of the most meaningful symbols of Hanoi.
Army Museum (closed on Mondays. It can be skipped or replaced by another site, for example, Ethnology Museum, depending on interest). This is one of the oldest museums in Hanoi. It is particularly interesting to see and important for those wishing to learn about Vietnam, because most of the country’s history is about war and fighting for independence. There are both indoor and outdoor sections with the display of military-related artifacts. Its exhibition dated back to as early as the Hung Vuong Era, which is considered the start of Vietnam as a country. The first thousand years of being colonized by the Chinese are elaborately depicted, as well as the century's struggle against the French colony.
The period from 1954 to 1975, corresponding with the Vietnam War and the division of North-South is also well documented. Most artifacts, exhibitions, films, and photos revolve around the tradition of Vietnamese as being courageous and insistent and protecting the national integrity; certain technologies in adapting and producing weapons; and the diplomatic relationship between the Vietnamese military with its counterparts elsewhere in the world.
Lunch at a local restaurant.
Drive to Halong in the afternoon (170 km east of Hanoi – 3 ½ hours).
Check-in at the hotel in Ha Long.
Day 3
HALONG BAY – HANOIAfter breakfast, your guide and driver will meet you at the hotel and start to discover Halong Bay, located in the heart of the Gulf of Tonkin, 175 kilometers to the East of Hanoi, Ha Long Bay is supposed to be the most fascinating tourist destination in Vietnam. The stunningly fantastic seascape of limestone pillars twisted with enigmatical myths of the water area allures visitors, natives, and foreigners alike. Listed as a World Heritage Site for its outstanding natural beauty. “The Dragon descending to the sea” as it is known in Vietnamese, the picturesque Halong Bay has more than 3,000 limestone islets rising from the clear emerald waters, many of them containing beautiful grottoes. Some of them you will be able to visit during this 4-hour boat cruise.
Light lunch on board before returning to Halong.

Day 4
HANOI – HUEAfter breakfast, your driver will meet you at the hotel and transfer you to the airport for the flight to Hue, the royal city of Vietnam’s last ruling dynasty.
Arrive in Hue, the old capital of Vietnam has plenty of wonderful places to visit. The first place is the Imperial City with many gates of the fortress, including the famous forbidden Gate of the Noon (Ngo Mon) and many temples and worship places (Trieu Mieu, Hung Mieu, Thai Mieu) inside the City. Moreover, the Purple Forbidden City is the home to many emperors, queens, and royal families of the Nguyen Dynasty in the 19th century. Another notable place is the complex of the tomb of Nguyen emperors, including the Gia Long Tomb, Tu Duc Tomb, Minh Mang Tomb, Dong Khanh Tomb, and Khai Dinh Tomb.
Lunch at a local restaurant.
Sightseeing in Hue: visit the royal tombs of King Tu Duc a glance at the tomb can create the illusion of a park, packed with frangipani trees and grove of pines. The tomb was constructed between 1864 and 1867. The construction of the Tu Duc’s tomb requires an incredible amount of money and labor, thus resulting in a rebellion of workers. Therefore, the tomb was renamed Khiem Lang, in comparison with the former name: Van Nien Co (expresses the wish to be permanent). In addition, all the constructions’ names were changed to bear the word Khiem (Modesty) in their names, as the king wanted to express his humility.
It was the place where he could retreat from the Citadel to compose poetry or go hunting because the monument was finished when the king was still in his reign. The design of the tomb is clearly said to reflect the profound knowledge and romance of the king’s characteristics.
King Khai Dinh tomb, though the smallest, Khai Dinh tomb is the most costly and recent compared with other Nguyen royal tombs. After his ascendancy to the throne in 1916, Emperor Khai Dinh chose the slope of Chau Chu (Chau E) Mountain, which is 10km from Hue center, to construct his “home in the other world” – according to Oriental belief. It was started building in 1920 and completed 11 years later, by his successor – Emperor Bao Dai.
In order to complete the tomb, the rulers had to raise the national tax to 30%. By then Vietnam's sovereignty was lost to French invaders and Western culture was prevailing all over the country. Consequently, the Khai Dinh tomb is the result of the intermingling of Oriental and Occidental, Roman and Gothic styles, Hindu and Buddhist styles, as well as ancient and modern features. It’s also known as Ung Lang
Tu Hieu pagoda nestled in a pine forest, this popular pagoda was built in 1843 and later co-opted by eunuchs from the Citadel. Today 70 monks reside at Tu Hieu; they welcome visitors to the twin temples (one dedicated to Cong Duc, the other to Buddha). Listen to their chanting daily at 4.30 am, 10 am-noon, 4 pm, and 7 pm. Tu Hieu Pagoda is about 5km from the center of Hue. Tu Hieu is associated with Zen master Thich Nhat Hanh, who studied at the monastery in the 1940s, but lived in exile for more than 40 years and was only permitted to return to Vietnam in 2005.Check-in hotel in Hue.

Day 5
HUE – DANANG – HOI ANAfter breakfast, your guide will meet you at the hotel and take a dragon boat, and cruise along the
Perfume River - spans approximately 80 kilometers in length, flowing from Truong Son Mountain through Hue City Centre and Bang Lang Fork. The river was given its name over 100 years ago, due to the scent of flowers that dropped in the water from upriver orchards. As the strong floral scent was carried through the river during autumnal months, it resulted in locals naming it as Perfume River.
Passing Dong Ba market is the biggest commercial center of Thua Thien Hue Province and the adjacent regions. It stands along the north bank of the Huong River. Before the opening of the Dong Ba Market, there was a grand market named Qui Gia Thi outside of the Chanh Dong Gate in the reign of King Gia Long. The name Qui Gia Thi referred to the return of the Nguyen Dynasty to Phu Xuan (Hue nowadays). In the summer of 1885, the capital city was attacked and Qui Gia Thi Market was burned to ashes. Not until 1887 did King Dong Khanh rebuild the market and rename it, Dong Ba Market. Since then, the market has functioned as the main resource of food for the palaces, hospitals, army camps, and dormitories of the national universities such as Quoc Hoc, Dong Khanh, Binh Linh, Thien Huu, etc. in 1899, during the Western-style reconstruction project of King Thanh Thai, the market was moved to the nowadays position. Even though the Dong Ba Market has undergone several projects since the beginning of the 20th century, nowadays, it still embraces many old features.
To Thien Mu Pagoda, built on a hill overlooking the Song Huong (Perfume River), 4km southwest of the Citadel, this pagoda is an icon of Vietnam and as potent a symbol of Hue as the Citadel. The 21m-high octagonal tower, Thap Phuoc Duyen, was constructed under the reign of Emperor Thieu Tri in 1844. Each of its seven stories is dedicated to a manushi-buddha (a Buddha that appeared in human form).
Then visit the vestiges of the royal residence at the Imperial City, Famously being one of Vietnam’s seven UNESCO World Heritage Sites, the Imperial City of Hue has long been a must-see attraction for tourists visiting a hidden charm of Vietnam. The Imperial City of Hue was actually a walled fortress and the palace belonged to the ancient city of Hue, which, was the capital city of the Nguyen Dynasty for 140 years dating back from 1805 to 1945.
The grandeur architecture was planned to be built in 1803 by Gia Long – an emperor who founded the Nguyen Dynasty. During 27 years from 1805 to 1832, the Imperial City of Hue was finally completed under the reign of Minh Mang, making it the most massive structure built in the history of modern Vietnam involving thousands of workers, millions of cubic meters of rock, and the huge volume of burden workload. It locates on the northern bank of Huong River, turning South with a total land area of 520 ha. The place was made UNESCO Site in 1993 with the remained buildings being actively restored and preserved after the destruction from the Vietnam War.
The Imperial City of Hue has a circumference of 10 kilometers with a height of 6.6 meters and 21 meters thick with forts being meanderingly arranged, accompanied by cannons, artilleries, and ammunitions. Initially, the fortress was built solely by soil, only to be replaced by bricks afterward. Surrounding the city is the complicated canal system that served not only as a protection but also as a waterway of nearly seven kilometers.
Lunch at a local restaurant.
In the afternoon, depart from Hue to Hoi An via the picturesque Hai Van Pass (Pass of the Ocean Clouds) moving through many pretty red-tiled villages and enjoying a spectacular view of the sea and the sky. Visit Cham Museum in Danang and proceed to Hoi An.

Day 6
HOI AN – DANANG – HO CHI MINH CITYHoi An - now still retains much of its Asian authentic architecture as well as its nostalgic ambiance. On this UNESCO World Heritage Site, stand still various constructions of different Asian cultures, among which the Japanese Pagoda Bridge and Chinese Phuc Kien Assembly Hall are the most outstanding. Hoi An’s handicrafts and tailor-ship are renowned worldwide.
After breakfast, your guide will meet you at the hotel and take a walking tour to discover the historic town which used to be a prosperous seaport city during the 16th to 18th centuries.
Visit the Hoi An market, resting on the banks of the Thu Bon River, bustling Hoi An Central Market is certainly worth a look for its authentic slice of Vietnamese life. The market is busy throughout the day with locals bargaining hard alongside tourists, so it's best to arrive first thing in the morning. The negotiating over fish usually starts around 07:00 as the fishermen drop their catch off and the market vendors and local buyers dive in to get the best fish. Be warned that it can get very messy, nevertheless, it's certainly a sight not to be missed.
Tan Ky Old House - is an almost perfect example of an 18th merchant’s residence in this major commercial port town. The name Tan Ky, meaning “Progress Shop”, was given to the house by the second generation to express the owner’s wish for a prosperous business. In spite of the decline in business of the town and the huge devastation of annual floods, seven generations of the family have continuously strived to keep the house in good condition. Therefore, though it’s not the oldest, Tan Ky is the most well-preserved in Hoi An.
Japanese bridges - for long have a reputation for their pure beauty of being graceful curves and the inspiration for Zen spirit. It’s no doubt that the most famous bridge of this kind in Vietnam is the one in Hoi An – the historic riverside town in the Central Part, and Fukien Assembly Hall (Phuc Kien) Assembly Hall was built around 1690 and functions as a traditional assembly hall for the Chinese ethnic group from Fujian, China to socialize, but later was transformed into a temple dedicated to their deity named Thien Hau – the goddess of the sea who protects sailors from danger. As told by the preceding generations, the Chinese in Hoi An decided to build that temple to worship the statue of the goddess which was found in Hoi An Beach in 1697. Probably the most prominent amongst the 5 Assembly Hall in the town,

Visit the canal where the colorful floating market of Cai Be is located and see the locals producing rice popcorn and other sweets. Floating markets have existed for a long time in the region. It basically is a market where people sell and buy things above water.
Since rivers are the main way of transportation, ferries and boats are very popular for traveling and transporting. Gradually, people gathered together in one or some certain places on the river to sell fruits mostly picked from their own gardens. Then they made business by selling goods that had been brought from other places.
Lunch at a local restaurant.
In the afternoon, continue cruising along with fruit orchards in narrow canals to the town of Vinh Long plonked about midway between My Tho and Can Tho, Vinh Long is a major transit hub. It's a gateway to island life, Cai Be floating market, abundant orchards, and rural Homestays.

HO CHI MINH CITY - CU CHI TUNNELSAfter breakfast, your guide and driver will meet you at the hotel and drive to Cu Chi Chi (75 km northwest of Ho Chi Minh City) to visit an amazing complex of underground tunnels used by Vietcong soldiers during the American war. The Chu Chi Tunnels are part of a massive war museum in Ho Chi Minh. They offer visitors a sneak-peek at the underground life of Vietnamese soldiers back in 1948. The site has over 120km of underground tunnels, with trap doors, living areas, kitchens, storage facilities, armory, hospitals, and command centers. After the war against the French, Vietnamese soldiers expanded the tunnels and included effective air filtration systems, which helped them survive the Chu Chi carpet bombings.
Return to Ho Chi Minh City, lunch at a local restaurant.
In the afternoon, visiting Chợ Lớn (Chinatown) is the traditional and distinctive lifestyle of the ethnic community here that makes Cho Lon famous and attractive to people everywhere it exists.
Chinese ethnic people have lived and supported their lives by many different activities such as opening food stalls serving traditional food and selling clothes or household items. Not only can tourists enjoy the delicious dishes like noodles, rice, and wontons, but they are also appealing to the colorful decoration, housing styles, and most vibrant life in District 5 of Ho Chi Minh City.
One noticeable characteristic of this area is the structure of the shophouse which was constructed at the beginning of the 18th century. A typical shophouse is only 3-4m in width, but 4-5 times more in length, with an inside yard. Trading activities often take place in the front part of the house while daily activities occur inside.
Ba Thien Hau Temple in Saigon is a Buddhist temple dedicated to the Chinese sea goddess, Mazu. It’s believed that she protects and rescue ships and people on the sea by flying around on a mat or cloud. Mazuism is connected with traditions and beliefs from both Taoism and Buddhism. Mazuism is, therefore, the incorporation of different aspects and traditions which have merged to form a new belief. You will find this temple in ‘Cholon’ (Chinatown) in District 5, which is roughly a twenty-minute drive from the city center.
Continue sightseeing with a photo stop at the former Presidential Palace (formerly known as Independence Palace) has stayed in the mind of many generations of not only Vietnamese but also foreigners. It is known as the famous historical witness which passed through the palace and was built on the site of the former Norodom Palace, a landmark in Ho Chi Minh City, and designed by architect Ngo Viet Thu. As Vietnam was split into North Vietnam and South Vietnam, the building served as presidential home and workplace. Today in most locals' minds, the palace is remembered vividly as a marked end to the war, just like the fall of the Berlin Wall, as the North Vietnamese tank crashed its gates on April 30th, 1975.
Notre Dame Cathedral (officially Basilica of Our Lady of The Immaculate Conception). While the market stands at a modern and crowded corner of the business district, the ancient cathedral is located in a very peaceful picturesque corner of downtown.
Constructed between 1863 and 1880 by the French colonists, following their conquest of the city, the building reaches a height of up to 60m. Bishop Lefevre put the first stone for the construction of the church on 28 March 1863. Initially, it was called Saigon Church. The name Notre-Dame Cathedral was given after Bishop Pham Van Thien held a ceremony to install the statue of Peaceful Notre Dame, made with granite from Rome, in 1959. In 1962, the Vatican anointed it as Saigon Chief Cathedral and conferred it Basilique. Since this time, this cathedral has been called Saigon Notre-Dame Cathedral Basilica. If time permits
