Day by day Itinerary
Day 1
Pakse to PaksongThe route leaves Pakse on a largely flat road that climbs gradually onto the Bolaven Plateau. The plateau sits at sufficient elevation that the temperature drops noticeably and the air carries more moisture than the Mekong lowlands. Coffee is cultivated across this landscape with a seriousness that reflects the quality of the soil and rainfall rather than any recent fashion. Laven villages occupy the road corridor along the western edge of the plateau, and the ride passes through several of them in the first half of the day. Two waterfalls break the journey: Tad E-Tu and then Tad Fane, the latter recognised as the highest in Champasak Province. The day covers approximately 50 kilometres and ends in Paksong at the Sinouk Coffee Residence, a property with an obvious connection to the surrounding plantations.
Day 2
Paksong to Salavan to Tad LoThe day begins with an early transfer to Salavan, the provincial capital, rather than a ride out of Paksong. The principal stop in Salavan is an UXO clearance operations camp, where the ongoing work of identifying and removing unexploded munitions provides direct context for the scale of ordnance dropped on Laos during the nine-year American bombing campaign. The ruined temple complexes in the area offer a quieter counterpoint before the group departs after midday. The afternoon ride, approximately 60 kilometres in total across the day, follows the road toward Tad Lo, a waterfall settlement on the Xe Set river. Accommodation at the Tad Lo Lodge places guests within earshot of the falls through the night.
Day 3
Tad Lo to PakseThe final day on the plateau closes the loop back toward Pakse. The route incorporates Tad Pasuam waterfall before the road descends and the ride transitions into a transfer for the final 30 kilometres. The day covers a maximum of 40 kilometres by bicycle. Villages along the route maintain the same unhurried character that has defined the plateau section throughout. The group returns to Pakse and the Residence Sisouk, which serves as a base before the journey south resumes the following morning.
Day 4
Pakse to ChampasakLeaving Pakse, the route crosses the Mekong and joins Road 14a, a quiet road that runs along the eastern bank. The riding is flat and the traffic is light. The destination is Champasak, a small town with a measured pace and a visible connection to its role as a former royal seat. Forty kilometres of pedalling brings the group in by early afternoon, leaving time to walk the town independently or sit with a coffee along the waterfront. The accommodation is at a local guesthouse in the town centre.
Day 5
Champasak to Wat Phou to Don KhongThe morning ride from Champasak covers 15 to 20 kilometres to reach Wat Phou, the pre-Angkorian Khmer sanctuary built against a forested hill overlooking the Mekong. The site predates the main Angkor complex and carries UNESCO World Heritage designation. Time at the ruins is unhurried. The group then transfers approximately 80 kilometres south to Don Khong, the largest of the 4000 Islands. Arrival in the late afternoon coincides with the sunset over the Mekong, and the pace of the island discourages any ambition beyond watching the light change. Accommodation is at the best available local guesthouse on the island.
Day 6
Don Khong to Don KhoneThe final riding day in Laos follows the river south through paddy fields and riverside settlements, covering approximately 30 kilometres. The road offers regular reasons to stop. Don Khone, the destination, is reached by private boat where available, a short crossing that marks the transition from road to island. The island carries a layered history: the Khone Falls are close by, there is a swimmable river area, and the physical remains of French colonial infrastructure are still present. The Sala Din guesthouse provides accommodation on the island.
Day 7
Border Crossing and Arrival at Stung TrengThe border formalities are completed in the morning, after which a Cambodian guide joins the group for the remainder of the journey. The day's riding, approximately 60 kilometres, begins on quiet roads through agricultural land and forest toward the O'Svay community. Lunch is taken with a local family, a straightforward exchange with a Khmer household rather than a staged experience. In the afternoon, a longtail boat carries the group out onto the river through the rapids and pools below the falls. The Irrawaddy dolphin population in this stretch of the Mekong is small and endangered; sightings are likely but not guaranteed. The group returns downstream to a tented camp on Koh Lon Island in the middle of the river, where the evening is passed at the water's edge.
Day 8
Stung Treng to Preah VihearThe morning begins with a transfer north toward the Kulen Prum Tep Wildlife Sanctuary before the riding starts. The road flattens for much of the day and then begins to rise as the route approaches the Thai border and the Dangrek escarpment. The day covers approximately 70 kilometres by bicycle. The final approach to Preah Vihear is made by four-wheel drive, climbing to the temple complex perched on the Poy Tady Cliff at 525 metres. The sanctuary was constructed during the Angkor period, and its position on the cliff edge gives it a different character from the lowland temples: the architecture is oriented to a long processional axis descending the hillside, and the views across the plain extend without interruption. The visiting population is predominantly Cambodian, which gives the site a particular quality.
Day 9
Preah Vihear to Koh Ker to Banteay SreiThe day opens with a drive to Koh Ker, a remote archaeological complex in the jungle that spans 81 square miles and encompasses more than 180 individual sanctuaries. Visitor numbers are low. The central pyramid temple rises in seven tiers to a height of approximately 36 metres and is the largest structure of its type in Cambodia. After the site visit, the group rides approximately 60 kilometres through rolling countryside to Beng Mealea, a temple of considerable scale that has been left in a more advanced state of forest integration than most Angkor-area sites. Strangler figs have worked their roots through the stonework and visitors are permitted to move through the ruins at ground level and above. The day ends with a transfer to Banteay Srei, where accommodation is at the Bong Thom Homestay in a premier villa with a forest outlook.
Day 10
Banteay Srei to Siem ReapThe morning ride from the homestay to Banteay Srei temple passes through Cambodian countryside and through several villages. The temple itself is distinguished by the density of its carved decoration: the sandstone surfaces carry floral patterning and narrative scenes drawn from the Ramayana in a level of detail that rewards close examination. The afternoon moves into the Grand Circuit of Angkor. Preah Khan, one of the larger temple complexes in the system, comes first, followed by Neak Pean with its surrounding water features, then Ta Som, and finally Pre Rup, a pyramid temple that sits well for the late-afternoon light. The day covers 60 kilometres by bicycle. Dinner is taken at a local restaurant in Siem Reap.
Day 11
Angkor CycleThe day is given entirely to the Small Circuit of Angkor, covered by bicycle over approximately 40 kilometres. The pyramid of Takeo, the jungle-integrated Ta Prohm, the royal bathing pond of Sras Srang, and the walled city of Angkor Thom constitute the morning and early afternoon. Within Angkor Thom, the Bayon temple with its array of carved faces, the pyramid of Baphuon, the celestial temple of Phimeanakas, and the carved stone terraces of the Elephants and the Leper King each warrant time. After lunch, the group visits Angkor Wat. The late afternoon is spent at a position within the complex chosen for the quality of the light at sunset.
Day 12
Roluos and Tonle SapSmall trails through the countryside east of Siem Reap lead to Wat Trak temple before the route turns toward the Roluos group, the oldest surviving Angkorian temple complex. Preah Ko, Loeli, and the pyramid of Bakong represent an earlier architectural vocabulary than the main Angkor sites. The day covers approximately 30 kilometres of riding. In the afternoon, the group boards a small wooden boat for the journey to Kompong Phluk, a village built on stilts above the Tonle Sap. The lake is the largest in Southeast Asia, and its water level varies dramatically by season; in the higher-water months, the boat moves among tree canopies in the flooded forest surrounding the village. During the dry season, an alternative floating village at Chong Khneas can be visited instead. The evening includes dinner and an Apsara dance performance at a local restaurant.
