Day by day Itinerary
Day 1
Roluos Group Temples Bike TourIn the morning:
After pick up from your hotel, you set off cycling toward Cambodian National Highway 6 along a bumpy road that passes through the countryside and alongside rice fields and rural local homes. The opportunity to venture out from crowded, modern Siem Reap and explore the local Cambodian way of life is one that is best enjoyed by bike.
After an hour of cycling, you will arrive at the east gate of the Bakong temple. Since its 1930’s-era reconstruction, the temple offers many fascinating glimpses of how it followed the modeling principles of Mount Meru, complete with the indicators of its moat surrounded by an inner sanctum of five levels. The early morning viewing of Bakong is considered optimal and is a great way to start your cycling day.
Heading north 15 minutes away to temple Preah Ko, you can admire the intricate carvings of this first temple to be built in the ancient and defunct city of Hariharalaya, now referred to as Roulus. Like Bakong, Preah Ko is also off the congested tourist path and offers a quiet way to explore a 1,200 year old historical gem.
Completing the temple tour, you will cycle another half hour northward to temple Loile, which is the smallest and best preserved one of the Roulus group. Amazingly, Loile once was an island in the middle of a great reservoir measuring 3,800m by 800m, which has been drained to allow rice cultivation. The temple, which resides within an active wat, stands today offering many architectural highlights that serve as testaments to its well-preserved state.
In the afternoon:
After lunch, cycling continues along a path named “Riverside” that meanders alongside Siem Reap River for 90 minutes. This path allows you to see the different lifestyles of the wealthy and poor Cambodians, with large homes sporting luxury cars parked out front interspersed with ones reflecting the impoverished living conditions of most villagers.
Concluding the tour and to better observe the way of life of regular Cambodians, you will continue off-road 45 minutes and cross over a bridge that will lead to the small Watthmea temple. A perfect place to relax after a long day of cycling, you can explore the grounds on your own before heading back to Siem Reap and your hotel.
