Private Cycling Journey From Luang Prabang To Hoi An
Summary
This seventeen-day private cycling journey moves through two countries and several distinct landscapes, connecting the UNESCO-listed town of Luang Prabang with the historic port of Hoi An via some of the least-travelled roads in mainland Southeast Asia. The route crosses the limestone plateaux of Xiang Khouang Province, descends through the karst valleys of central Laos, passes through the Konglor cave system by longboat, and enters Vietnam along the old Ho Chi Minh Highway. From there it follows the Truong Son mountain range south through Phong Nha, crosses the former Demilitarized Zone, and climbs the Hai Van Pass before finishing at the Cham archaeological site of My Son. The riding is varied and at times demanding, with significant elevation on several days and a combination of sealed mountain roads and quiet back lanes. Transfers by vehicle are used where road conditions or distance require them, and the overall pace allows for meaningful engagement with each place along the way. This is a journey for cyclists who want to move through a landscape rather than observe it from a distance.

Day by day Itinerary
Day 1
Luang PrabangLuang Prabang: Arrival and Orientation. Guests are met at the airport and transferred to their accommodation, where the group assembles for a thorough briefing covering route logistics, bike fitting, and daily protocols. Where the afternoon schedule allows, a short ride through the UNESCO-protected old quarter introduces the handling of the bikes on quiet streets, passing several of the town's principal wats before the route loops through the stalls of the Hmong Night Market. Dinner is taken at a local restaurant operating as part of a vocational training programme, where the menu is both carefully prepared and connected to a specific social purpose.
Day 2
Luang Prabang to Phou KhounLuang Prabang to Phou Khoun: Into the Mountains. A one-hour vehicle transfer carries the group over the first significant mountain barrier, covering sixty-five kilometres of road that would be disproportionate effort for the riding available. The cycling begins at elevation, on a mountain-top road that runs into the crossroads town of Phou Khoun, where the accommodation is modest and the setting is defined by the altitude and quiet of the surrounding ridgelines.
Day 3
Phou Khoun to PhonsavanPhou Khoun to Phonsavan: The Limestone Plateau. The road into Xiang Khouang Province is characterised by sustained climbs and views across limestone peaks that extend the horizon considerably. The day includes a vehicle transfer at the start to position the group on the most productive section of road, and a short van transfer at the end to bring everyone into Phonsavan without unnecessary kilometres on urban approach roads. The total riding distance is eighty kilometres across terrain that rewards a measured pace.
Day 4
Phonsavan: Plain of Jars Round TripPhonsavan: Plain of Jars Round Trip. Riding above one thousand metres, the group makes a sixty-five-kilometre circuit to the jar sites of the Xiang Khouang Plateau. The megalithic vessels, carved from single blocks of stone, are distributed across several distinct sites on open grassland. Their age and function remain subjects of genuine scholarly debate, which gives the visit a quality of inquiry rather than simple tourism. The altitude keeps the temperature reasonable and the roads carry little traffic.
Day 5
Phonsavan to ThathomPhonsavan to Thathom: South from the Plateau. The day begins with a vehicle transfer out of Phonsavan and starts at That Foun, a sixteenth-century Buddhist stupa standing in relative isolation on a low plain. From there the route runs ninety kilometres south on mountain roads through changing forest cover and occasional villages, finishing in the small town of Thathom, which has few visitors and no particular concessions to them.
Day 6
Thathom to Ban NahinEntering Bolikhamxay. Travel today combines cycling and vehicle transfer as the route descends from Xiang Khouang Province into Bolikhamxay, arriving at Ban Nahin on the bank of a river where a guesthouse provides comfortable rooms and a kitchen known specifically for its red curry. The eighty kilometres of cycling passes through the fringes of Nam Kadding forest, where the tree cover and the lowering altitude mark a distinct change in the character of the journey.
Day 7
Konglor Cave: The Valley RoadThe new tarmac road from Khoun Kham runs through a valley framed by limestone karst formations. Villages and livestock are close to the road, and the riding is sociable in character, with locals acknowledging the group as it passes. The road ends at Konglor Cave, one of the longest navigable water cave systems in Laos. Local boatmen pilot narrow longboats through approximately seven kilometres of underground river passage. A section of the interior is illuminated, allowing the scale of the cave's formations to register clearly. The return journey covers 84 kilometres in total before the group settles back in Ban Nahin for the night.
Day 8
Ban Nahin to Lak Sao: The Thakhek Loop RoadBan Nahin to Lak Seo: Route 8 to the Border. Following Route 8 eastward, the road approaches the Vietnamese border through a landscape familiar to riders who have covered the Thakhek loop by motorcycle. A midday stop at a natural pool allows a swim and an informal lunch alongside local families using the same spot. Lak Seo is a working border town without particular character, but it marks the final night in Laos before an early morning crossing the following day.
Day 9
Lak Sao to Vinh: Crossing into VietnamA short 30-kilometre ride brings the group to the border crossing point, where the Laos team hands over to a new Vietnamese crew. The transition is a natural moment of reflection on the country just crossed. The route continues by road toward Vinh, stopping at Kim Lien village, the birthplace of Ho Chi Minh, where his preserved house and an adjacent museum offer a considered introduction to modern Vietnamese history. The descent from the mountains onto the coastal plain marks a clear geographical shift. The group arrives in Vinh in the late afternoon.
Day 10
Vinh to Huong KheA 40-kilometre transfer by vehicle positions the group at Pho Chau, the starting point for today's 80-kilometre ride along the Ho Chi Minh Highway. The route winds through jungle and past villages settled beneath the Truong Son mountain range. The karst formations visible from the road are substantial, and the overall density of the landscape gives this section a distinct character compared to the plateau riding of Laos. Huong Khe is a small, quiet town in Nghe An Province. It offers an undemanding overnight stop before another full day in the saddle.
Day 11
Huong Khe to Phong Nha: Into the National ParkThe Ho Chi Minh Highway continues south, and the quality of the road surface rewards the effort. Around 80 kilometres of riding through mountain scenery precedes a one-hour vehicle transfer into Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park. The park contains one of Vietnam's most significant cave systems, with 65 kilometres of tunnels and underground rivers formed approximately 250 million years ago. During the American War the cave served as a field hospital and ammunition depot, and evidence of aerial attack remains visible at the entrance. Community conservation initiatives with Flora and Fauna International are active in the area, and a visit to village projects within the park may be possible depending on timing.
Day 12
Phong Nha to Khe Sanh: Across the DMZAn early morning visit to Phong Nha Cave precedes a 90-minute road transfer back to the Ho Chi Minh Trail for the day's riding. The route crosses what was the Demilitarized Zone at the 17th Parallel, a boundary whose significance during the war remains palpable in this landscape. A stop at Truong Son National Cemetery marks the passage of tens of thousands of North Vietnamese soldiers killed in the mountain campaigns. From the cemetery it is 14 kilometres further to Cam Lo, where the trail historically extended westward into Laos. The day closes with a short transfer to Khe Sanh, site of the prolonged 1968 siege and one of the most heavily documented battles of the American War. Total distance by bike is around 80 kilometres.
Day 13
Khe Sanh to A Luoi: The Dakrong ValleyThe morning begins at the Khe Sanh combat base, where aircraft wreckage and military equipment remain on display beside the original airstrip. The day's 65-kilometre ride runs largely downhill from the Laos border toward the Dakrong River, which is crossed by a bridge before the route follows the waterway south along what formed the southern section of the Ho Chi Minh Trail. The road carries very little traffic and the terrain rolls gently, offering a different quality of riding from the more demanding climbs earlier in the journey. A Luoi is a small town set in a valley, and the overnight stop here is restful.
Day 14
A Luoi to Hue: Back Roads to the Imperial CityThe roads south of A Luoi are in poor condition, so today's route diverges from the Ho Chi Minh Trail and cuts east across the country toward Hue on 60 kilometres of back roads through the Vietnamese interior. The route joins Highway 1 a few kilometres south of the city, at which point there is a choice between transferring by vehicle into the centre or continuing the final stretch by bike. Hue is a city of considerable historical weight, the seat of the Nguyen dynasty and still marked by the presence of its imperial monuments.
Day 15
Hue: Temples, Tombs, and the Perfume RiverToday covers 25 kilometres at a measured pace on the back roads and footpaths of the Hue countryside. The day opens at the Imperial Citadel, where the ruins of the dynastic palace complex occupy a significant area of the city. From there the route follows the bank of the Perfume River to Thien Mu Pagoda before moving through quieter roads to the royal tomb of Minh Mang, one of the more architecturally refined of the Nguyen funerary monuments. The loop closes via the tomb of Khai Dinh and returns to central Hue by early afternoon, leaving time for independent exploration.
Day 16
Hue to Hoi An: The Hai Van PassThe longest riding day of the Vietnamese section covers 90 kilometres and includes the 11-kilometre climb to the summit of the Hai Van Pass. The recent completion of a road tunnel through the mountain has reduced traffic on the pass road substantially, and the ascent now has a quality of calm that was previously harder to find. The views from the summit take in a long stretch of coastline. The descent leads to Lang Co beach, where the group stops to swim before a vehicle transfer covers the final 35 kilometres into Hoi An. The remainder of the afternoon is free for independent movement through the UNESCO-listed old town.
Day 17
Hoi An to My Son and Return: The Cham RuinsThe final day of riding covers 40 kilometres on back roads that skirt the highway south of Hoi An, passing through rice fields, eucalyptus plantations, and villages before arriving at My Son. This was the ceremonial and religious centre of the Champa kingdom, occupied continuously from the fourth to the fourteenth century. The surviving brick temple towers, though damaged by aerial bombardment during the war, remain an impressive and largely uncrowded archaeological site. Time in the afternoon is given over to exploring the complex before a vehicle transfer returns the group to Hoi An, where the journey ends.
