Northern Laos through the highlands of Vietnam
Summary
This fifteen-day private journey moves through three distinct landscapes with a deliberate, unhurried logic, combining cycling with river travel and a private cruise. It begins in Luang Prabang and follows the Nam Ou north into the limestone hills of Nong Khiaw, then rides deeper into the protected forests of Nam Et–Phou Louey National Park for a night safari guided by local Khmu villagers, before Sam Neua and the Vieng Xai caves. Crossing into Vietnam, the route descends through Pu Luong and Cuc Phuong before Ninh Binh and Hanoi. The final two nights are spent aboard a private cruise in Halong Bay, among karst islands and limestone caves. It is built for travellers who value direct access to protected natural areas and historical sites over high-volume circuits.
Highlights
- A guided night safari by traditional boat inside Nam Et–Phou Louey National Park, led by Khmu villagers with deep knowledge of the protected forest
- The 100 Waterfalls trek from Nong Khiaw, moving through rice paddies and jungle to a series of cascades in the Nam Ou valley, with a locally prepared lunch at the falls
- The Vieng Xai cave complex near Sam Neua, where a network of limestone karst concealed an underground city of 20,000 people during the Secret War
- Kuang Si Falls outside Luang Prabang, a three-tiered cascade feeding pools of azure water, with a visit en route to a Buffalo Dairy supporting local farming communities
- Two days aboard a small-group cruise in Halong Bay, with kayaking at Tung Sau Pearl Lagoon, a visit to Sung Sot Cave, and time at Cua Van floating village

Day by day Itinerary
Day 1
Luang Prabang and the Kuang Si ValleyThe first full day establishes the pace of the journey. A morning drive southwest of the city brings you to the Tat Kuang Si Buffalo Dairy, a quietly important community project that trains local farmers in animal husbandry and produces some of the more interesting aged cheeses available anywhere in the Mekong region. The dairy is unhurried and the conversation with its staff is worth extending. From there the road continues to Kuang Si Falls, a series of three tiered cascades feeding into pools of unusually clear water tinted a pale mineral blue. The falls are visited before the midday influx, which allows a more considered look at the upper tiers and the forest that frames them. There is time to swim. The return to Luang Prabang arrives in the afternoon, leaving the evening free for the town itself, which is most accurately observed on foot at dusk when the streets quiet and the temples are lit from within.
Day 2
Luang Prabang to Nong KhiawThe day begins with a transfer out of the city, joining the road that runs alongside the Nam Ou River as it opens northward through stands of riverside bamboo and secondary forest. Progress follows the river's pace. At the Nam Ou Dam the sealed road gives way to a dirt track that narrows as the valley steepens, and it is here that the group boards a traditional narrow boat for the final approach to Nong Khiaw. The boat journey takes approximately one hour. Nong Khiaw is a small town that has changed less than most in this part of Laos. The bungalow resort for the night sits beneath the formation known locally as Elephant Head Mountain, its limestone face catching the last light of the afternoon. Dinner is taken at the resort.
Day 3
Nong Khiaw: 100 Waterfalls TrekThis day is spent entirely on foot and by boat in the hills around Nong Khiaw. A morning boat journey along the Nam Ou River passes a small Lao riverside village before the trail begins, leading through streams and active rice paddies toward the base of the 100 Waterfalls. The cascade system is extensive, and for several hours the path moves entirely through jungle and water, guided by someone with detailed knowledge of the terrain. Lunch is prepared at the falls by the guide, using locally sourced ingredients in a traditional style. The return route follows a narrow villagers' trail from the upper section of the falls back down into the valley, with open views across the Nam Ou watershed. The boat returns to the resort in the late afternoon. Overnight in Nong Khiaw.
Day 4
Nong Khiaw to Muang Haim via Muang Ngoi and Vieng KhamThe morning begins with a boat journey upstream to Muang Ngoi, a small village that remains accessible only by river and has changed little in character over the past several decades. An hour is sufficient to walk the main path and observe the daily rhythm of the place before the route continues into the mountains on dirt roads, passing through remote settlements that see very little outside traffic. On rejoining the main road, a 2.5-hour transfer carries the group to Muang Haim, a village on the boundary of Nam Et–Phou Louey, the largest protected natural area in Laos. The day covers roughly 50 kilometres across varied terrain. Overnight in Muang Haim.
Day 5
Nam Et-Phou Louey Night SafariFrom Muang Haim, the group transfers to a Khmu village that serves as the entry point for the Nam Nern Night Safari, an ecotourism programme managed in partnership with the communities living inside the protected area. After an orientation, the journey continues upstream by traditional boat with Khmu guides who have spent their lives in this forest. The eco-lodge sits among old-growth trees deep within the reserve. The afternoon allows time to rest in surroundings that are genuinely remote. As darkness comes, the group ventures out by boat for wildlife spotlighting along the river channels, listening for and observing the nocturnal activity of a protected forest that harbours tigers, clouded leopards, and a wide range of bird species. The Lao-style bungalows are modest and functional, and the sounds of the forest are uninterrupted through the night. Overnight in the Nam Et–Phou Louey eco-lodge.
Day 6
Nam Et-Phou Louey to Sam NeuaA short walk around the eco-lodge in the early morning with a Khmu guide covers the medicinal plants used by the community and the remains of a settlement that predates the current village by several centuries. The return downstream by boat takes roughly the same time as the journey in. From the village entry point a transfer heads northeast toward Sam Neua, a provincial capital that receives few international visitors and is better for it. The town is compact, the market is active in the early evening, and the guesthouses are adequate. It serves well as a resting point before the border crossing and as a base for the following morning's detour.
Day 7
Sam Neua to Vieng Xai to Pu LuongA short drive east of Sam Neua brings the group to Vieng Xai, a village that from the road gives no indication of its history. The limestone karst that rings the valley contains hundreds of caves, and between approximately 1964 and 1973 these caves sheltered up to 20,000 people, including the senior leadership of the Pathet Lao movement, living underground to survive one of the most intensive aerial bombing campaigns ever conducted. The caves are accessible, well-documented, and largely unvisited by the international tourism circuit that fills Luang Prabang. Time here is spent accordingly. The group then continues to the Vietnamese border, where the Laos team transfers responsibility to the Vietnam crew. The road descending from the border into the highlands of Thanh Hoa Province offers an immediate change in landscape. A partial day on foot through this terrain covers roughly forty kilometers before a transfer to a lodge positioned on the mountainside above the Pu Luong valley.
Day 8
Pu Luong Nature Reserve to Cuc Phuong National ParkThe morning begins at a suspension bridge over the Cham River, where a walking route passes through rice terraces and alongside a series of traditional water wheels that move river water into hand-constructed bamboo aqueducts. The engineering is entirely vernacular and has been in use, in various iterations, for centuries. The route reaches the home of a local fishing family, where there is time to rest before a bamboo rafting section on a calm stretch of the river. The afternoon continues on foot and by transfer toward Cuc Phuong National Park, arriving in the late afternoon. Cuc Phuong was established in 1962 as Vietnam's first national park and its old-growth forest section, in the interior of the reserve, contains trees of considerable age. Overnight accommodation is within the park boundary.
Day 9
Cuc Phuong to Tam CocBreakfast in the park is followed by a visit to the Endangered Primate Rescue Centre, which rehabilitates gibbons, langurs, and lorises confiscated from the illegal wildlife trade. The centre is a working facility rather than a visitor attraction, and the distinction is apparent. From the centre's location in the interior of the park a trail leads out through old forest to the park's southern gate, using a route that sees no general visitor traffic. The day continues south through agricultural land, passing through a pineapple-growing area before arriving in the vicinity of Tam Coc along the Ngo Dong River. Tam Coc sits in the Ninh Binh karst zone, a landscape of limestone outcrops rising from flat paddy fields that bears a structural resemblance to parts of Halong Bay. Overnight in Tam Coc.
Day 10
Ninh Binh ExplorerThe day is given over to the landscape of the Ninh Binh basin without a fixed programme. A rowing boat trip on the Ngo Dong River passes through three river caves and between flooded rice terraces worked by local farming families. The pace on the water is slow. In the afternoon there is an option to climb the approximately five hundred steps to the summit of Mua Mountain, which provides an extended view over the floodplain and the karst formations that punctuate it. The evening is at leisure in Tam Coc.
Day 11
Ninh Binh to Hanoi via Kenh GaThe morning includes a boat excursion at Kenh Ga, a village built entirely on the water where daily life is conducted by boat and the architecture floats. Time on the water here is unhurried. After lunch the transfer to Hanoi takes approximately two and a half hours, arriving in the city with enough of the afternoon remaining to walk the streets around Hoan Kiem Lake before dinner at a restaurant of the guide's selection. Hanoi is a city that rewards attention at street level. Overnight in Hanoi.
Day 12
Hanoi to Halong BayA morning transfer northeast from Hanoi reaches Ha Long City by early afternoon, where the group boards the vessel that will serve as home for the next two nights. The cruise moves southeast into the bay, passing a limestone formation known as Fighting-Cock Islet before anchoring in the Tung Sau lagoon for a late-afternoon kayaking session. This section of the bay is used for pearl cultivation and the floating frames of the growing lines sit at regular intervals among the karst walls. Dinner is served aboard as the vessel anchors for the night. The evening is quiet. The bay at night, away from the main port and the larger tourist fleet, is darker and more complete than most first-time visitors expect.
Day 13
Halong Bay: Luon Cave and Cua Van Floating VillageThe day begins before the main visitor fleet gets underway. A rowing boat excursion into Luon Cave in the early morning explores a section of enclosed karst accessible only by low-clearance traditional craft. The morning continues with kayaking around Cua Van, a floating village in the interior of the bay that is among the older continuously inhabited settlements in the area. After lunch aboard, the afternoon stops at Trinh Nu Beach, a small strand of sand at the base of a limestone wall, and the adjacent cave, which is partially open to natural light and notable for its interior formations. The evening follows the same rhythm as the night before, dinner aboard, time on the sundeck, an early return to the cabin.
Day 14
Halong Bay to HanoiThe final morning on the water begins early. Before the main tourist boats are moving, the cruise reaches Sung Sot Cave, the largest cave system inside the bay, with 10,000 square metres of interior space and a 500-metre paved path threading through its formations. The scale is considerable and the early hour keeps the visit quiet. After returning to the boat and taking a late breakfast, the group packs and the cruise moves back toward Tuan Chau International Marina, arriving mid-morning. A shuttle carries the group back to Hanoi, arriving in the afternoon. The final evening is free. Overnight in Hanoi.
Day 15
Hanoi DepartureYour guide accompanies you to the airport at a time suited to your departure. The city is at its most composed in the early morning, and those with later flights may find value in a final hour on the streets before leaving.

Laos–Vietnam Explorer | Luang Prabang to Hanoi
This ten-day journey moves from the quiet riverine capital of Luang Prabang through some of the least-visited terrain in northern Laos before crossing into Vietnam near Dien Bien Phu. The route combines cycling through primary forest and minority villages with a long boat passage on the Nam Ou River. On the Vietnamese side, the itinerary follows a sustained highland traverse through Tai and Hmong communities, karst valleys, and terraced rice country before descending gradually toward Hanoi. The pace is deliberate. The landscapes change in character each day. The journey ends with a passage through Cuc Phuong National Park, home to one of Vietnam's most significant primate conservation programs.

From there it follows the Truong Son mountain range south through Phong Nha, crosses the former Demilitarized Zone, and climbs the Hai Van Pass before finishing at the Cham archaeological site of My Son. The riding is varied and at times demanding, with significant elevation on several days and a combination of sealed mountain roads and quiet back lanes. Transfers by vehicle are used where road conditions or distance require them, and the overall pace allows for meaningful engagement with each place along the way.
