This combined trip to Korowai and the Dani tribes is an amazing experience! In this tour, you will see, learn and experience what the Korowai and the Dani tribes have in common regarding their cultures. This tour will start in Jayapura and then take a flight to Dekai and visit the Korowai and from the Korowai, we will fly to Wamena or Baliem Valley where the Dani tribe is.

Day by day Itinerary
Day 1
Jayapura - Baliem ValleyArrival in the Baliem Valley and visit of the local market of Wamena
In the morning arrival in Jayapura, you’ll be welcomed by our staff and check-in for the onward flight to Wamena. On arrival at Wamena airport, you will be met by your guide and after a short drive, you will visit the large marketplace of Wamena which is well worth seeing. Here, Dani from the surrounding area offer their agricultural products. Besides the very popular sweet potato, many other vegetables and fruits are offered, and the market is also the largest trading place for the highly sought-after wild boars. From the market, we take you by car to The Baliem Valley Resort. Here, you can enjoy lunch or an afternoon coffee, depending on the time of day. Later dinner.

Day 2
Baliem ValleyEasy hiking in the southern Baliem Valley and first encounter with the Dani people.
In the morning, we drive to the southern Baliem Valley past Wamena. By the village of Sogogmo, not quite 2 miles outside Kurima, the road ends. This is where our hike along the huge Baliem river starts. First, we cross the roaring Baliem river on a traditional suspension bridge. We continue through romantic Dani settlements with their terraced fields and wild sugar cane groves. Throughout the hike, we enjoy magnificent views of the river and the narrow valley. Around noon, we get to the church square of Seinma, where we eat our picnic lunch surrounded by stunning scenery. Outside Kurima, we cross the river again on a wild and romantic suspension bridge. To return to our vehicle, we need to cross a few side valleys. There will be many unique photo opportunities today. We get back to the resort in the late afternoon.

Day 3
Baliem ValleyTraditional pig festival, an unforgettable experience.
Traditional one-day pig festival in a traditional Dani village, either in the resort grounds or in the Jiwika region. Many adorned people from the Dani tribe in traditional clothing will take part in the festival. Such food celebrations with hot stones and earth pits are probably the most interesting part of a trip to New Guinea. If you like taking photos and videos, you will certainly get your money’s worth today! It is difficult to describe what’s so unique about these food celebrations; you will have to see and experience it for yourself. Lunch will be a picnic in the village. If you like, you can taste the food from the traditional earth pit afterwards. The freshly cooked pork and sweet potatoes are delicious! We return back to the resort in the late afternoon.
The pig festival takes place in changing villages. Precise information on travel times is therefore not provided.

Day 4
Wamena - DekaiFlight to the lowlands and start of the boat trip towards the Korowai area.
In the morning, there is a transfer to the airport. Then, you take the regular flight to Yahokimo (Dekai), located at the upper reaches of Brazza River. After arrival, there is a visit to the local market and the opportunity for the last shopping for the tour. After lunch at a local restaurant, we drive to the harbor. At the harbor our motor longboat and crew awaits us. We go downstream until we reach the village of Patipi Dibawa. Here, we raise our first tent camp right down by the river. This short stage gives us an impression of what awaits us over the next few days: the purest jungle landscapes!
Transportation: Flight from Wamena to Dekai: 30 minutes. 1 hour of drive, 2 hours by boat. Guide included. Accommodation: tent. Meals: full board.
Day 5
KorowaiArrival in Mabul and preparation for the trekking.
In the morning, we have an early breakfast before we continue downstream in our longboat. As we continue down the Brazza river, we pass amazing old growth forest landscapes. Horn bills, flying foxes, and other birds emerge with the sound of the passing boat. Around noon, we will reach the mouth of the mighty Siret River. After our lunch break, we go upstream on the Siret river to the Korowai settlement Mabul. As we go upstream, the Siret river changes its face; the current gets stronger, sand banks appear, big tree trunks often block parts of the way, fewer and fewer local boats can be spotted. Under best circumstances, we will reach Mabul in the afternoon. Mabul is a small settlement of Korowai people who were re-settled by the Indonesian government, asked to leave behind their nomadic lifestyle in the forest. We will use this settlement as the starting point of our trekking expedition into the Korowai corridor. After we set up our tents and kitchen, we will start recruiting our porters for the next few days. With a little bit of luck, we can set up our tents inside an empty stilt house.

Day 6
KorowaiStart of trekking, visit of first Korowai settlement.
After breakfast, we meet our escort team. All of our luggage and our food for the next few days will be carried by our porters. We leave Mabul in the Eastern direction. Within only 50 meters, we are standing in a thick forest, which we will not leave for the next few days. Today, we will approximately need 5 hours until we reach our first destination: a fantastic jungle settlement with several tree houses. The traditionally dressed Korowai give us a friendly welcome. Tent camping next to the tree houses.

Day 7
KorowaiFull day with the Korowai for sago processing .
Today, we will follow several Korowai families into the sago forest. Here, we will experience a spectacle from another world. The forest nomads chop a huge sago palm with their stone axes, open the trunk, and start smashing the sago pulp. The sago pulp is further processed by women who wash it in primitive washing installments – built only from leaves, branches and Rotan. The pure sago is the staple food for all jungle dwellers. Photography enthusiasts will never forget this day! In the afternoon, we are back at the tree houses, where our cook starts preparing our next real jungle dinner: maybe we will have papaya vegetables, sago larva, and plantains!

Day 8
KorowaiTrekking to another Korowai settlement.
We leave our first Korowai camp and go into the forest again. We want to walk to another Korowai village and spend the night there. The trekking through the untouched tropical forest is unique and sometimes challenging. It may be necessary to cross small rivers or swamps. In the early afternoon, we expect to arrive in the village and set up our camp for today. Maybe the Korowai here will show us how to repair a tree house in extreme heights, or how to make and use bows and arrows – the most important weapons here. Or we will join the Korowai on a journey into the forest to seek food. They are true hunters and gatherers: in a few hours their nets are filled with spiders, larva, locusts and other exotic animals. They even shoot flying foxes from the trees.

Day 9
KorowaiAnother day in another world.
This is our last day with the Korowai and in this wonderful forest. We thank our hosts and hike back to Mabul. Today's stroll through the forest takes about 4 hours. In Mabul, there will be time for an extensive bath in the river. We will set up our night camps again in Mabul, or - depending on the weather - we will get into the boat and cover the first part of the return journey. In either case, we will have another night in the tent and dinner from the campfire.

Day 10
KorowaiReturn by boat.
In the morning, we leave Mabul and follow the river downstream. After some 2 hours, we again pass the mouth of Brazza River and continue our journey back to Patipi Dibawa. Late in the afternoon, tent camp in the familiar small village at the upper reaches of the Brazza River.

Day 11
Dekai – JayapuraBack to the capital.
Today we start very early towards the harbor of Dekai. After about a 2 hours drive, we reach our destination and say goodbye to our boat crew. We continue directly to the airfield of Dekai. Around noon, flight back to Jayapura. After arrival in Jayapura, with a direct tour to Lake Sentani, lunch on the way right next to the lake. In the afternoon, check in at hotel. Dinner.

Day 12
Jayapura – Jayapura airportLast day in Papua
After an enjoyable breakfast at the hotel, we will take you to the airport and ensure a smooth check-in for your individual onward flight.

Our circuit uses less trodden mountain paths, where few foreigners have ever set foot, to eventually approach the monastery from our campsite above the clouds. The overnight adventure includes two picnic lunches, a camp dinner and breakfast, all tentage, sleeping mattresses, a first-aid kit and the services of experienced BTB guides and cooks.
