Day 1
Arrive in Akan OnsenYour adventure in Japan starts with arriving at Kushiro Airport and travel to Akan Onsen by transfer shuttle for your first evening on Hokkaido Island. Depending on your arrival time, there may be an opportunity to explore the local village shops in Akan before dinner at your accommodation.

Day 2
A day of exploration at Lake AkanThis morning, you can visit the Akanko Ainu Kotan Village to learn about the history and culture of Hokkaido’s indigenous inhabitants, the Ainu. Watch a traditional dance performance, officially recognized as an important feature of Japan’s cultural heritage. Later in the day, see a different side of Lake Akan by boat, with a local canoeing experience. Return to your Onsen accommodation for a second night.

Day 3
Travel to Kawayu Onsen and visit Mount LoHead onwards from Akan Onsen towards Kawayu Onsen, where you will spend the evening, by prearranged transfer and train. En route, take in the iconic yellow Io sulfur rocks at Mount Io; an active volcano with plumes of sulfur emanating from over 1,500 fumaroles covering its slopes.
Known as ‘Seseki-petsu’ in the traditional Ainu language, which translates as ‘hot river flowing through the village’, Kawayu Onsen features some of the most famous geothermal waters of Hokkaido and wider Japan.

Day 4
Travel to Utoro Onsen and the UNESCO certified Shiretoko PeninsulaTravel by pre-booked transfer, train, and bus to the hot-spring town of Utoro Onsen to the northeast of Hokkaido, which is the entrance to the Shiretoko Peninsula in the north. Using local accommodation with fantastic Onsen baths and delicious regional cuisine, this is a perfect location to explore the wider region. Undertake an optional walk along the Shiretoko Five Lake trails - a scenic, varied 3.3km flat hike around the lakes, ending with spectacular coastal views out over the Sea of Okhotsk.

Day 5
Tour ends at MemanbetsuAfter breakfast, in favorable weather, you may like to take a unique boat ride on the Sea of Okhotsk in areas of the Shiretoko UNESCO area inaccessible overland. Head onwards to Memanbetsu airport, where the tour ends in the late afternoon.

Shimanami Kaido is one of the most famous cycling routes in Japan, starting at Onomichi city in Hiroshima Prefecture and ending at the Imabari city in Ehime prefecture. The winter Nakasendo trail tour is a fully-guided tour suitable for anyone who can walk at a gentle pace for three to four hours in comfort. In general, the route is greatly undulating but it also includes some short, steeper climbs. The lower temperatures of winter include the probability of snow at some points along the route. Time to include both the Western and the Chinese New Year holiday periods, this tour provides modern-day walkers with a comforting taste of Edo Period Japan in winter. We cross several high passes, where encountering snow is likely, but the emphasis is on comfort and each day we find warm welcomes and surroundings in Japanese inns. Here, we can relax on one occasion around an open hearth fire and enjoy the excellent meals of locally sourced produce. Thermal hot spring baths are another feature of the Nakasendo trail. The ancient pilgrimage to the Three Grand Shrines of Kumano spans as far back as 1,000 years ago and still continues today. The pilgrimage routes that crisscross Kil, Japan’s largest peninsula have become known as the Kumano Kodo Pilgrimage Trail. Pilgrims and tourists, alike, take on the route to reach Kumano Hongu Taisha, Kumano Nachi Taisha, and Kumano Hayatama Taisha. Throughout history, retired emperors, high-ranking officials, and other determined pilgrims have completed the pilgrimage. Today, the Kumano Kodo Pilgrimage Trail is a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site. The route spans through the Kii mountain range, making for an arduous journey. Though challenging, the paths wind through verdant forests and pass by and over cascading waterfalls and streams. In addition to providing a path between the shrines, the Kumano Kodo links Kyoto to the mountainous Kii region.

In general, the route is greatly undulating but it also includes some short, steeper climbs. The lower temperatures of winter include the probability of snow at some points along the route.
