Tibet Adventure
Summary
This journey moves through three distinct geographies in a single, coherent arc. It begins in Beijing, where two days allow considered time at the Forbidden City, the Mutianyu section of the Great Wall, and the residential lanes of the old Hutong quarters. From Beijing, the route shifts entirely: a 41-hour train journey across northern China and up onto the Tibetan Plateau delivers you to Lhasa by soft sleeper, the landscape changing hour by hour outside the window. Four days in Lhasa give space to visit the Jokhang Temple, Sera Monastery, and the Potala Palace without haste. The journey then continues west along the Friendship Highway, crossing high passes above 5,000 metres, skirting Yamdrok Lake, and reaching Rongbuk Monastery beneath Mount Everest before descending through Kyirong and across the border into Nepal. The route concludes in Kathmandu after a long drive through the Himalayan foothills. Fourteen nights connect these places in sequence, with the train journey itself forming the physical and psychological centre of the experience.
Highlights
- Riding the world's highest railway across the Changtang Plateau, watching snow-covered peaks and glacial lakes pass at altitude through the train window

Day by day Itinerary
Day 1
Beijing: Arrival and First EveningYou arrive in Beijing and meet your guide at 6 pm in the hotel lobby for a brief orientation covering the structure of the journey ahead, including the transition points where local guides will take over in each city. The evening begins with a short walk through the streets immediately surrounding the hotel to establish your bearings. Dinner this first night is at a restaurant serving Peking duck, a preparation particular to Beijing in which the bird is roasted over fruitwood and presented in stages at the table. You are staying two nights at the Chongwenmen Hotel or a property of equivalent standing.
Day 2
Beijing: Mutianyu and the Evening AcrobaticsThe drive to Mutianyu takes roughly two hours from central Beijing. This section of the Great Wall is among the better-preserved stretches, with enough of its original structure intact to give a clear sense of the scale of construction across such terrain. The wall here follows a ridge line that required workers to carry material up steep gradients without roads. A picnic lunch is taken on the wall itself. You return to Beijing in the afternoon, and the evening is given over to an acrobatics performance, a form that has been practised and refined in China for more than two thousand years and remains technically demanding at the professional level. You continue at the Chongwenmen Hotel or similar.
Day 3
Beijing: Tiananmen Square, the Forbidden City, Hutongs, and the Night TrainThis is a full day on foot and by subway. Tiananmen Square, one of the largest public squares in the world, holds the Monument to the People's Heroes and the Great Hall of the People along its edges. From the square you enter the Forbidden City directly through the Meridian Gate. Built between 1406 and 1420, the complex served as the ceremonial and administrative centre of Chinese imperial government for more than five centuries. UNESCO lists it as the most extensive collection of preserved ancient wooden structures in the world; the site was inscribed as a World Heritage property in 1987. After the Forbidden City, the afternoon moves into the Hutong, the narrow lanes formed by the walls of traditional courtyard compounds. These alleys represent a residential geography that has largely disappeared from modern Chinese cities and offer a different texture from the ceremonial scale of the morning. In the evening you transfer to the railway station to board the overnight train to Lhasa. The journey takes approximately 41 hours in total. Tonight the train moves west across the north of China, passing through Taiyuan. You sleep in a soft sleeper berth.
Day 4
Train: Across Northern China toward the PlateauThe train follows a route that passes through Lanzhou, historically a junction point for Silk Road traffic and the meeting place of routes leading toward both the Tibetan plateau and Central Asia. Beyond Lanzhou the train reaches Xining, where the Qinghai-Tibet railway begins. As the second night approaches, the altitude begins to rise noticeably and the landscape outside the window becomes more severe: dark cliffs carrying patches of snow, mountain ridges outlined in moonlight, and a sense of increasing remoteness from any settled geography. The train continues through the night. You remain on the soft sleeper.
Day 5
Train to Lhasa: Crossing the Changtang PlateauBy morning the train is well inside Tibet, moving across the Changtang Plateau on the world's highest operational railway line. The passes on this section may carry snow at any time of year. In summer the plateau lakes sit within wide grasslands that support significant bird populations. The visual scale is consistent and unhurried. On arrival at Lhasa station, located on the outskirts of the city, you are welcomed with a white katak, the traditional prayer scarf offered as a gesture of respect and arrival. The remainder of the day allows for rest and acclimatisation, which is necessary at this altitude. You check in to the Thangka Hotel or a property of comparable standard, where you stay for four nights.
Day 6
Lhasa: Jokhang Temple, Barkhor Street, and Sera MonasteryThe Jokhang Temple is the spiritual centre of Tibetan Buddhism and the most actively visited sacred site in the city. Pilgrims arrive continuously from across the Tibetan world, many having walked for weeks or months. The temple was constructed, according to tradition, over a lake after earlier monastery sites failed to hold their foundations. At its centre stands a large golden Buddha of particular religious significance. After time inside the temple, you join the pilgrims on the Barkhor, the circular street that rings the Jokhang and functions as a sacred circumambulation route. Movement here is clockwise, following Tibetan Buddhist practice. In the late afternoon you visit Sera Monastery, one of the great monastic universities of Tibet. On days other than Sunday, the monks conduct philosophical debate sessions in the courtyard: a structured, animated exchange in which points of doctrine are argued through gesture and call-and-response, a practice that has continued here for centuries.
Day 7
Lhasa: Potala PalaceThe Potala Palace stands 130 metres above the city on Marpo Ri hill. It was for centuries the seat of Tibetan government and the winter residence of successive Dalai Lamas. The structure divides into two wings: the White Palace, which contained administrative and residential functions, and the Red Palace, which holds chapels, shrines, and the funerary stupas of former Dalai Lamas. Visits proceed with a guide, which shapes the pace but does not reduce the experience of moving through rooms of this architectural and historical weight. The afternoon is free for independent exploration of the city.
Day 8
Lhasa: Free DayThis day is unscheduled and can be used for rest, independent walking, or one of two optional monastery visits arranged through your guide. Ganden Monastery, founded in the early fifteenth century by Tsongkhapa, the founder of the Gelug school of Tibetan Buddhism, sits above the Kyichu River valley. The kora circuit around the monastery is considered among the more rewarding walks in the Lhasa area. Drepung Monastery, on the western outskirts of the city at the foot of a hill range, was at its height home to more than ten thousand monks and remains one of the most significant Buddhist monastic institutions in Tibet. Both options are available through your tour leader; neither is obligatory.
Day 9
Lhasa to Gyantse: High Passes, Yamdrok Lake, and the DzongThe drive to Gyantse passes over two high passes with stops along the way. From the Khamba-la at 4,750 metres the view down to Yamdrok Tso opens without gradual approach: the lake sits in the valley below in a particular shade of turquoise that shifts with the light and time of day. The road descends to follow the lake's shore before climbing again to the Karo-la at 5,045 metres, where the Nojin Gangzang glacier is close enough to the road that its texture and scale are clearly visible. On arrival in Gyantse, a walk to the Dzong, the old Tibetan fort that dominates the town, gives views across the rooftops and surrounding countryside. You stay one night at the Gyantse Hotel or similar.
Day 10
Gyantse to Shigatse: Pelkhor Choede Monastery and TashilumpoThe morning is spent at Pelkhor Choede Monastery, founded in the fifteenth century by the king of Gyantse. The monastery is unusual in that it does not belong to a single tradition of Tibetan Buddhism; several schools were represented here simultaneously, which was uncommon. Within its walls stands the Gyantse Kumbum, an eight-storey structure containing a dense series of small chapels, each filled with Buddhist images covering a wide iconographic range. The drive to Shigatse, Tibet's second-largest city, passes through small villages along an agricultural valley. At Tashilumpo Monastery, the traditional seat of the Panchen Lamas, you tour a complex of buildings each carrying distinct decorative schemes and religious imagery. After the guided section, there is the option to walk the kora around the monastery or visit the local market independently. You stay one night at the Tashi Choe Ta Hotel or similar.
Day 11
Shigatse to Lhatse via SakyaThe three-hour drive west to Sakya passes across open plateau terrain. Sakya Monastery is the main seat of the Sakya school of Tibetan Buddhism, one of the four principal schools, and its archive holds more than 40,000 texts, including thousands of volumes of Buddhist scripture. A single continuous bookshelf within the complex is said to hold approximately 10,000 ancient manuscripts. The collection has earned Sakya the informal designation of the second Dunhuang, referencing the famous repository of manuscripts discovered in the cave complex at Dunhuang in Gansu province. After a guided tour of the monastery there is the option of a short walk and a visit to a nunnery associated with the complex, one of the few on this route. The afternoon drive continues to Lhatse, a small town where you spend the night at the Vienna Hotel Lhatse or similar.
Day 12
Lhatse to Rongbuk: The Friendship Highway and EverestThe route follows the Friendship Highway west via Shegar before turning south and beginning a long climb into the Himalaya. The road gains altitude steadily as the peaks ahead grow in definition. Rongbuk Monastery, sitting at approximately 5,000 metres, is considered the highest monastery in the world. It was first established in 1902 by a Nyingma lama and once housed more than 500 monks; today around 50 monks and nuns maintain the site, sharing a prayer hall while living in separate quarters. From the monastery the view extends directly up the Rongbuk valley to Everest Base Camp and beyond to the north face of Qomolangma, which stands at 8,849 metres. The nuns here are accustomed to visitors and welcome participation in evening prayers. You stay one night at the Rongbuk guesthouse.
Day 13
Rongbuk to Kyirong: Paiku Lake and ShishapangmaThe sunrise over the Himalayan ridgeline from Rongbuk is worth the early hour. The day then involves a long drive of approximately 350 kilometres, but the route holds sustained interest. The road crosses open grassland around Paiku Lake, where the eight-thousander Shishapangma, at 8,013 metres the fourteenth-highest mountain in the world, is visible from the plateau. The road then descends into the Kyirong valley, a more enclosed and vegetated landscape, where you spend the final night on the Chinese side of the border. Accommodation is at the Kerung Hotel or similar.
Day 14
Kyirong to Kathmandu via the BorderThe morning begins with the border crossing from China into Nepal at Kyirong-Rasuwa. Border procedures here can be slow, particularly on the Nepali side, and the timing of the crossing is subject to conditions on the day. Once through, the drive to Kathmandu is long and the road quality is variable for much of the route. On arrival in Kathmandu a walking tour with your local guide covers Durbar Square, the historic plaza adjacent to the old Royal Palace, where the Newari architectural tradition is most fully expressed in its tiered temples and carved woodwork. You stay one night at the Mulberry Hotel or similar.
Day 15
Kathmandu: DepartureNo activities are scheduled for the final morning. You may depart the accommodation at a time that suits your onward arrangements.

A Taste of Tibet
This seven-day journey moves between two distinct worlds separated by a single mountain range. A morning flight then crosses the Himalayas to Lhasa, where the landscape shifts and the altitude begins to register. Over three days in Tibet, the itinerary covers the principal sites of the capital at a considered pace: Drepung Monastery, the largest in the country; Norbulingka, the Dalai Lama's traditional summer residence; the Potala Palace, elevated above the city on its rocky base; and Sera Monastery, where the courtyard debates of resident monks remain one of the more arresting scenes in Tibetan monastic life. A Tibetan guide accompanies the group throughout the time in Lhasa. The return crosses the Himalayas again before a final night in Kathmandu.

This seven-day overland journey traces the Sino-Nepal Highway from Lhasa southwest through the high Tibetan plateau, passing the monastery cities of Gyantse and Shigatse before ascending to Everest Base Camp at 5,200 metres and descending to the Gyirong border crossing into Nepal. The route moves through some of the most consequential religious and geographic terrain in Asia. Lhasa provides three days for acclimatisation and measured engagement with its principal monuments. The road west then unfolds across high passes, glacial lakes, and open barley country before the Himalayan panorama comes fully into view near Gawula Pass. The journey ends not at a destination but at a threshold, with Kathmandu waiting on the far side of the border.

The drive to Bees Hazaar Taal (Twenty Thousand Lakes) is an exciting highlight of this trip. Another is the jungle drive-through grassland, riverine and sal forests as you make your way to the Gharial hatchery farm. It’s not uncommon to do several elephant safaris on this excursion, but you may instead opt to go on nature walks or do something else to your liking.

Even if you opt out, you’ll have an entire day of rafting afterward. There’ll be a mix of bird-watching, crocodile, and dolphin viewing as you go down the river in a dugout canoe or raft. More bird-watching follows and then you may choose to relax or explore your surroundings. Finally, you’ll visit an elephant breeding center before you depart.

A Taste of Tibet
This seven-day journey moves between two distinct worlds separated by a single mountain range. Kathmandu provides an introduction to the Buddhist and Hindu traditions that shape this part of Asia, with time spent among the ancient temples and courtyards of the UNESCO-listed Bhaktapur district.

7 Days Lhasa to Kathmandu Overland Small Group Tour

Tibet Adventure

There’s activities like canoeing down the Rapti river where you might come across rare species of crocodiles like the Marsh Mugger and the fish-eating Gharial.
