7 Days Lhasa to Kathmandu Overland Small Group Tour
Summary
This seven-day overland journey traces the Sino-Nepal Highway from Lhasa southwest through the high Tibetan plateau, passing the monastery cities of Gyantse and Shigatse before ascending to Everest Base Camp at 5,200 metres and descending to the Gyirong border crossing into Nepal. The route moves through some of the most consequential religious and geographic terrain in Asia. Lhasa provides three days for acclimatisation and measured engagement with its principal monuments. The road west then unfolds across high passes, glacial lakes, and open barley country before the Himalayan panorama comes fully into view near Gawula Pass. The journey ends not at a destination but at a threshold, with Kathmandu waiting on the far side of the border.

Day by day Itinerary
Day 1
Arrival in LhasaArrival in Lhasa by train or flight marks the beginning of a journey that will not properly begin until the body has adjusted. A guide meets each traveller at the station or airport and transfers them to the hotel, passing the Lhasa River and, depending on the route, a first view of the Yarlung Tsangpo as it moves through the broad valley floor. Lhasa sits at 3,650 metres, and the afternoon is set aside for rest. Those who feel settled may walk to Potala Square, which offers an unobstructed view of the palace facade without the exertion of a formal visit. The priority for the remainder of the day is sleep.
Day 2
Lhasa: Potala Palace, Jokhang Temple, and Barkhor StreetThe morning is given to the Potala Palace, the former winter residence of the Dalai Lamas and the defining structure of Lhasa's skyline. Construction in its current form dates to the seventeenth century, though the site has been in use since the seventh. The most significant interiors are the gilded burial stupas of successive Dalai Lamas and the meditation cave associated with the thirty-third great king of Tibet, Songtsen Gampo. After a midday pause, the group proceeds to the Jokhang Temple, founded in the same century by Songtsen Gampo and regarded as the spiritual centre of Tibetan Buddhism. The principal image inside is a statue of Sakyamuni Buddha as depicted at age twelve. In the forecourt, pilgrims perform full prostrations on stone that has been worn smooth over generations. The Barkhor Street encircles the Jokhang and functions simultaneously as a religious kora route and a working market. Walking it in the company of locals and pilgrims offers a different register of the city than its monuments alone. Tibetan butter tea, served in the neighbourhood teahouses, is an uncomplicated and grounding way to end the afternoon.
Day 3
Lhasa: Drepung Monastery and Sera MonasteryDrepung Monastery, founded in 1416 by Jamyang Choje, a principal disciple of Tsongkhapa, is among the largest monastic complexes ever built. At its height it housed several thousand monks and functioned as a self-contained institution with its own administrative and productive infrastructure, including a kitchen of considerable scale that remains visible today. A Buddhist sculpture carving workshop operates near the monastery and can be visited at close quarters. In the afternoon the group moves to Sera Monastery, the second of the day's two great Gelug institutions. Sera is known for its debating courtyard, where monks engage in formal philosophical argument each afternoon between approximately three and five o'clock. The exchanges are conducted with specific hand gestures and a rhythm that makes the session visually as well as intellectually engaging. Within the monastery complex there are also three sand mandalas, a religious scripture printing house, and rock paintings of considerable age and colour.
Day 4
Lhasa to Shigatse via GyantseThe drive southwest from Lhasa is one of the most geographically varied days of the journey. The road climbs to the Gampala Pass at 4,790 metres, from which the first full view of Yamdrok Lake opens at 4,400 metres below. The lake is encircled by snow-covered ridgelines, and the distant peak of Nyenchen Khangsar at 7,191 metres provides scale. The route continues past the Karola Glacier, which descends close enough to the road to observe in detail, and then through the Simila Mountain Pass, where prayer flags mark the high point. Gyantse, historically Tibet's third city after Lhasa and Shigatse, is the next significant stop. The Pelkor Monastery and the Gyantse Kumbum, a multi-storey chorten of considerable architectural complexity, anchor the visit. The Gyantse Fortress is visible from the monastery grounds. After Gyantse the road descends into the Nyang River valley and continues west for roughly ninety minutes to Shigatse, the second largest city in Tibet and the seat of the Panchen Lama lineage. In summer the barley fields along the valley floor are in full colour. Overnight in Shigatse.
Day 5
Shigatse to Everest Base Camp via TingriThe morning begins at Tashilunpo Monastery, the institutional home of the Panchen Lamas, founded in the fifteenth century and still functioning as an active religious centre. Administrative formalities at Shigatse include the collection of the Alien's Travel Permit required for travel beyond this point. The drive west passes through Lhatse, a small roadside town that serves as a natural midpoint, before the road begins its serious ascent. The Tsola Pass at 4,600 metres and the Gyatso La at 5,248 metres mark the transition into the Himalayan zone. After entering the Mount Everest National Nature Reserve, the Gawula Pass at 5,198 metres offers a panoramic view across the northern Himalayan range. The final descent and approach to Everest Base Camp follows the new zigzag road to 5,200 metres. The north face of Everest is visible from the lodging area. Weather permitting, the late light on the upper mountain is best observed from the area around Rongbuk Monastery, where the group spends the night.
Day 6
Everest Base Camp to GyirongThe morning at Rongbuk depends entirely on conditions. A clear sunrise over the north face of Everest is among the most precise and unhurried views the mountain offers. Rongbuk Monastery, the highest monastery in the world and home to both monks and nuns, can be visited before departure. A closer approach to the base camp itself allows for photographs at the nearest accessible point to the mountain's base. The drive from EBC toward the Gyirong border covers approximately 370 kilometres and takes most of the day. The road passes beneath the north flank of Mount Shishapangma, the only eight-thousander located entirely within Tibet, and along the shore of Peiku Lake. The Ghungtang Lhamo crossing at 5,236 metres is the last significant high point before the road descends into the Gyirong valley. The town of Kyirong, near the border, is the final overnight stop on Chinese territory.
Day 7
Gyirong to the Nepal BorderThe guide accompanies travelers to the Gyirong port of entry and assists with the exit formalities on the Chinese side. At the border, the group transfers to Nepali transport for the onward drive to Kathmandu. The Chinese guide's service ends at the border crossing. The descent from the Tibetan plateau into the sub-Himalayan terrain of northern Nepal is itself a significant transition, and Kathmandu receives travelers who have crossed the full breadth of the plateau from its spiritual center to its southwestern edge.

A Taste of Tibet
This seven-day journey moves between two distinct worlds separated by a single mountain range. Kathmandu provides an introduction to the Buddhist and Hindu traditions that shape this part of Asia, with time spent among the ancient temples and courtyards of the UNESCO-listed Bhaktapur district. A morning flight then crosses the Himalayas to Lhasa, where the landscape shifts and the altitude begins to register. Over three days in Tibet, the itinerary covers the principal sites of the capital at a considered pace: Drepung Monastery, the largest in the country; Norbulingka, the Dalai Lama's traditional summer residence; the Potala Palace, elevated above the city on its rocky base; and Sera Monastery, where the courtyard debates of resident monks remain one of the more arresting scenes in Tibetan monastic life. A Tibetan guide accompanies the group throughout the time in Lhasa. The return crosses the Himalayas again before a final night in Kathmandu.

This journey moves through three distinct geographies in a single, coherent arc. It begins in Beijing, where two days allow considered time at the Forbidden City, the Mutianyu section of the Great Wall, and the residential lanes of the old Hutong quarters. Four days in Lhasa give space to visit the Jokhang Temple, Sera Monastery, and the Potala Palace without haste. The journey then continues west along the Friendship Highway, crossing high passes above 5,000 metres, skirting Yamdrok Lake, and reaching Rongbuk Monastery beneath Mount Everest before descending through Kyirong and across the border into Nepal. The route concludes in Kathmandu after a long drive through the Himalayan foothills. Fourteen nights connect these places in sequence, with the train journey itself forming the physical and psychological centre of the experience.

A Taste of Tibet
This seven-day journey moves between two distinct worlds separated by a single mountain range.

The drive to Bees Hazaar Taal (Twenty Thousand Lakes) is an exciting highlight of this trip. Another is the jungle drive-through grassland, riverine and sal forests as you make your way to the Gharial hatchery farm. Even if you opt out, you’ll have an entire day of rafting afterward. There’ll be a mix of bird-watching, crocodile, and dolphin viewing as you go down the river in a dugout canoe or raft.

7 Days Lhasa to Kathmandu Overland Small Group Tour

Tibet Adventure
This journey moves through three distinct geographies in a single, coherent arc. It begins in Beijing, where two days allow considered time at the Forbidden City, the Mutianyu section of the Great Wall, and the residential lanes of the old Hutong quarters. From Beijing, the route shifts entirely: a 41-hour train journey across northern China and up onto the Tibetan Plateau delivers you to Lhasa by soft sleeper, the landscape changing hour by hour outside the window.

Excursion at the Royal Chitwan National Park Safari
Nepal’s first national park will open you to the lifestyle of the Tharu village with cultural dance presentations you can participate in if you so choose. You may also opt to lounge around near the poolside, or go bird-watching and discover a few of the over 450 species found in Chitwan. There’s activities like canoeing down the Rapti river where you might come across rare species of crocodiles like the Marsh Mugger and the fish-eating Gharial. The drive to Bees Hazaar Taal (Twenty Thousand Lakes) is an exciting highlight of this trip. Another is the jungle drive-through grassland, riverine and sal forests as you make your way to the Gharial hatchery farm. It’s not uncommon to do several elephant safaris on this excursion, but you may instead opt to go on nature walks or do something else to your liking.

5-Day Trek through Bardia National Park Safari
Ride on elephant backs and see birds, crocodiles, and dolphins as you explore incredible wildlife on this safari. This animal lover’s delight begins in the beautiful Tharu garden. The museum is your last stop before you visit a crocodile breeding center. What follows is a full day of a walking safari which will bring you to the river banks of the Baghauraphanta and Karnali waters. After that is a half-day walking safari. Even if you opt out, you’ll have an entire day of rafting afterward. There’ll be a mix of bird-watching, crocodile, and dolphin viewing as you go down the river in a dugout canoe or raft. More bird-watching follows and then you may choose to relax or explore your surroundings. Finally, you’ll visit an elephant breeding center before you depart.
