Day by day Itinerary
Day 1
Taipei to Yilan: Countryside Roads and Gorge Riding (109km / 221m)Leaving southern Taipei, the route quickly moves away from the city and into Taiwan’s quieter countryside. The morning brings steady climbing, followed by an afternoon section that eases into a jade-coloured river valley and a deep gorge landscape.
The ride passes through the Chatianshan Nature Reserve, where traffic is light, and the scenery becomes increasingly open. There are challenging sections, but the rhythm is well balanced: a sustained ascent, long views, and a rewarding descent towards Yilan. Depending on conditions and timing, there may also be the option to visit nearby wild hot springs.
Day 2
Yilan to Lishan: Taiwan KOM Country (75km / 2633m)Today follows the final three-quarters of the Taiwan KOM Challenge route, one of the island’s most respected cycling climbs. It is a demanding day, but also one of the most memorable rides of the journey.
The road rises through quiet, remote mountain scenery, passing through Shei-Pa National Park. Along the way, there may be a chance to learn about Taiwan’s rare landlocked salmon, an endemic species found in the park’s highland waters.
The pace is unhurried by design. This is a day to settle into the climb, manage energy carefully, and enjoy the scale of Taiwan’s central mountains before arriving in Lishan for check-in and a well-earned dinner.
Day 3
Lishan to Sun Moon Lake: Wuling Pass and the Long Descent (110km / 2081m)The climbing begins soon after leaving the hotel as the route takes on the final kilometres of the Taiwan KOM Challenge. The day’s high point is Wuling, at 3,275 metres, the highest passable road point in Taiwan.
From the summit, the ride changes character completely. A long descent of around 50 kilometres follows, bringing a dramatic shift from high mountain air to lower valleys and warmer terrain.
The day finishes at Sun Moon Lake, Taiwan’s largest lake and one of its most recognised landscapes. In the evening, the group can explore Ita Thao Village, with its lakeside market, local food stalls, and relaxed atmosphere.
Riding note: Steady pacing is important on this stage. The climb is demanding, but the descent also requires concentration and energy, especially after the previous day’s effort.
Day 4
Sun Moon Lake: Rest, Culture, or a Gentle Ride (Rest Day)Today is a rest day at Sun Moon Lake, with time to recover and enjoy the area at a slower pace. Guests can choose how active they want the day to be.
For those who prefer a day off the bike, options include the Sun Moon Lake cable car, a local ferry across the lake, nearby temples and pagodas, or time in Ita Thao Village for tea, food, and local shops.
For riders who want to keep the legs moving, there is the option of a relaxed scenic ride around the lake: approximately 30 kilometres with around 500 metres of elevation. The route is known for its lakeside views and is a gentle way to experience the landscape without the intensity of the mountain stages.
Day 5
Sun Moon Lake to Alishan: The Tatajia Ascent (128km / 2699m)After the rest day, the route returns to Taiwan’s central mountains with the Tatajia Ascent towards the Jade Mountain area. This is another substantial climbing day, known for both its beauty and the effort required.
The road moves through terraced tea fields, rice paddies, mountain villages, and forested highland scenery. The ride passes through Yushan National Park before descending towards Alishan Township, set high on Taiwan’s central plateau in one of the island’s most famous tea-growing regions.
The day is demanding, but the variety of landscapes makes it one of the most rewarding sections of the itinerary.
Day 6
Alishan to Qishan: From Highlands to the Southwest Plains (126km / 1570m)Today the route leaves the Central Mountain Range and gradually descends towards Taiwan’s southwest. The morning is shaped by long downhill sections and changing scenery, passing near Tsengwen Reservoir before continuing towards Qishan.
The ride finishes at Qishan Old Street, a lively heritage district known for its historic buildings, baroque-style facades, market atmosphere, and Hakka cultural influence.
In the evening, the group can enjoy local Hakka cuisine, a fitting close to a day that moves from mountain roads into Taiwan’s warmer agricultural lowlands.
Day 7
Qishan to Kenting: Southern Countryside and Coastal RoadsThe final ride day continues through southern Taiwan’s countryside before stopping at Fo Guang Shan Buddha Museum, one of the island’s important Buddhist cultural landmarks.
From there, the route continues towards the coast, where the scenery opens into tropical southern Taiwan. The ride finishes in Kenting, a resort town known for its beaches, clear blue water, and relaxed end-of-island atmosphere.
The group rides towards Taiwan’s southern tip before heading to the beach to mark the end of the journey. In the evening, there is time to explore Kenting town and its night market for a final dinner together.
Day 8
Kenting to Taipei: Coastal Morning and Return TransferThe final morning is leisurely, with time for breakfast and, depending on conditions, one last swim before departure.
The group then transfers north by private vehicle, with a stop at Lukang Old Street in Taiwan’s agricultural heartland. Known for its heritage lanes, temples, and traditional architecture, Lukang offers a final cultural pause before the journey continues back to Taipei, where the tour ends.

Syakaro Historic Trail & Smangus Giant Trees
The Syakaro Historic Trail follows a path the Atayal people have walked for generations, threading through cedar forest and bamboo groves along the northern ridgelines of Hsinchu County. This two-day private itinerary covers the trail in full before settling for the night in Smangus, an Atayal community that remained without road access until 1979 and continues to operate as a collective to this day. The second morning is spent beneath the canopy of a cypress grove where individual trees predate the Tang Dynasty. Private transportation handles all transfers, allowing guests to give their full attention to the terrain and the people who have shaped it.

Alishan Indigenous Culture and Tea Experiential Private Tour
The drive from Chiayi climbs into the Alishan mountain range, reaching Tsou indigenous communities at elevations above 1,000 meters where tea cultivation and community-managed forest occupy the same terrain. The first two days are spent immersed in Alishan indigenous culture and experiencing Indigenous life as it was yesterday and is today. We first arrive in Chashan, the southernmost Indigenous community in the Alishan National Scenic Area. It is home to Indigenous Tsou, Indigenous Bunun, and Han Chinese (Hakka) peoples. This community is unique in that many of its young people have returned in recent years to serve as local guides or to start their own businesses, such as guesthouses and coffee shops. These young people have energized this community’s tourism efforts, while reconnecting with their roots and learning from their elders. On Day 1, you become quickly acclimated to Indigenous Tsou culture with an exploration of Chashan Community’s culture park. Gain an understanding of the traditional uses of plants, view a traditional watchtower, and experience the sounds of a traditional air whistle (a device used by the elders to signal the start of a meeting). Then, enjoy a meal of fusion cuisine (traditional Indigenous and locally grown ingredients made using modern cooking methods). This is followed by time spent with a local guide in a natural swimming pool, cooling off or simply relaxing in a beautiful natural setting. After changing clothes and enjoying another dinner of fusion cuisine, our local guide leads us in a torch lighting ceremony and tells us stories and legends. On Day 2, we head into the mountains above Chashan to experience more of traditional Alishan indigenous life, such as making a bird call from shellflower stalks and archery. From there, we head to the Danayigu Ecological Park. This nature reserve, located within the Indigenous Tsou community of Shanmei, is famed for its success in restoring its river and Taiwan shoveljaw carp population. There are several areas along the river for viewing these fish, including from above, along the Danayigu Suspension Bridge. Lunch is at one of Taiwan’s few “floating restaurants,” meaning that food is served in the river on trays that float. This is followed by a guided cultural tour. To end the day, we head to Shizhuo, a “hub” along the Alishan Highway with convenience stores and snack shops. On Day 3, there will be a major shift in our cultural exploration of Alishan as we visit a tea plantation and learn about and experience traditional tea processing methods. We wrap up this journey by sampling locally produced teas, followed by a Chinese cuisine lunch in a nearby restaurant. This 3-day, 2-night adventure includes round-trip transport from the Chiayi High-Speed Rail Station. Alternative pickup locations are available upon request (additional charges may apply).

All transport and accommodation arranged.

Ancient Trails & Hot Springs
