Day by day Itinerary
Day 1
ARRIVAL IN PENANGYour guide and driver will meet you at Penang International Airport and transfer to your hotel in the city center. At 13:00, we will proceed for a traditional Mee Goreng lunch. Mee Goreng is an Indian Muslim dish made of adeptly stir-fried over high heat, yellow noodles, which are laced with egg, deep-fried morsels and bathed with luscious chili and tomato concoction, then finished off with chopped lettuce and a wedge of lime for a tangy touch. As a dessert, ask your guide to look for a refreshing ice kacang, a combination of shaved ice and a mixture of red beans, grass jelly, sweet corn, assorted fruits, generously drizzled with rose syrup and condensed milk. It is wonderful how all these multifarious ingredients could result in a delish dessert.
At 14:30, proceed to visit the world’s fourth-largest reclining Buddha statue at Wat Chayamangkalara, a Siamese temple built by a Buddhist monk who came from Thailand. The five acres of land which was donated by Queen Victoria was to as a gesture of goodwill to Thailand and the Thai community. This Thai architecture house a 180-foot gold-plated statue of the reclining Buddha, PraBuddhachaiya Mongkul - said to be one of the longest in the world. The reclining Buddha represents Pra Buddhachaiya Mongkul, the historical Buddha, at his death. Behind the statue are countless niches with urns containing ashes of devotees. The interior of the temple is decorated with images of the Buddha, covered with gold foils, while the legend of Buddha's life has been painted on the walls by leading Thai artists. Cross the street and visit the Dharmikarama Burmese Temple, the only Burmese Buddhist temple outside Myanmar. It stands opposite Wat Chayamangkalaram Temple, with a pair of large stone elephants flanking the front gates. Inside the pagoda, the grounds are a Bodhi tree, a wishing pond, and apartments for the monks. The walkways have a series of panels with beautiful murals depicting scenes of the journey of Prince Siddhartha (dressed in typical Burmese fashion) achieving Nirvana and becoming Buddha. At 16:00 later, we will proceed to discover the colorful Little India, which usually gets animated. In the late afternoon, as soon as you walk into the area, you are hit by the aromatic smell of spices, sounds of the latest Bollywood hit blaring out of loudspeakers and all the colorful shops of the area. Though this small enclave is home to the main tourist site in such as the Sri Mariamman Temple, along Queen Street (the oldest Hindu Temple in Penang), the main reason most people come down to Little India is for the excellent food: You can eat at the small stalls along the streets, buy snacks from street vendors or sit down in one of the many restaurants!
Taste some favorite Indian vegetarian snacks at the street stalls such as the delicious 'Pakora' (fritters made of different kinds of veggies dipped in a spicy batter and deep-fried). Before enjoying the popular Nasi Kandar, a typical Mamak (Indian Muslim community in Malaysia) dish claimed to originate from Penang, consisting of fragrant plain rice or rice cooked in ghee (clarified butter), various spices and topped with different curry-based meat or vegetable dishes of your choice.
On the way back to the hotel, do not miss to taste some Indian sweets such as Laddoo (ball-shaped, made of flour, minced dough and sugar with other ingredients) that vary from the recipe), often served at festive or religious occasions.

Day 2
PENANGAt 08:00 this morning, your guide will make you experience a typical Malaysian breakfast: the Nasi Lemak, which can be considered a de facto Malaysian National dish, consisting of Malaysian coconut milk rice, served with sambal, fried crispy anchovies, toasted peanuts, and cucumber. In spite of its name (Nasi means “rice” and Lemak means “fat”, last year this staple Malaysian dish, has been recognized as one of 10 most healthy international breakfasts by TIME Magazine!
After breakfast, continue to explore Georgetown heritage trails by walk. The capital city of Penang was named after King George III of England, which is an interesting land of the old and new. It is worthy to note that Penang has one of the largest Colonial building collections in South East Asia. The tour includes a stop at Fort Cornwallis, built-in 1808. Fort Cornwallis also marks the spot where Sir Francis Light (the founder of the British colony of Penang) first landed on the island. Guests will be driven through the Street of Harmony, which houses the Anglican Church, Kuan Yin Chinese Temple, Mahamariaman Indian Temple, and the Kapitan Keling Mosque.
At 10:30 in the morning, do not miss a Roti Canai break! Roti Canai is a form of puffed bread served hot with curry or dhal. Tastes best when taken for breakfast or morning tea; eaten with the hand (the 'right' one of course!); accompanied by curry or dhal and washed down with strong, hot, sweet kopi-O (Malaysian style coffee)! It is a dish unique to Malaysia, which has its origins lost in the Indian community of those countries. Roti means bread in Hindi (and Malay) The term 'Canai' comes from 'channa', a mixture of boiled chickpeas in a spicy gravy from Northern India, which was traditionally served with.
The best way to accompany a Roti Canai is having the Malaysia National drink, the Teh Tarik! The Tarik (literally "pulled tea") is a hot milk tea beverage, which can be commonly found in outdoor stalls and Kopi Tiams. Its name is derived from the pouring process of "pulling" the drink during preparation and it is made from black tea, condensed milk or evaporated milk.
11:30 Next, proceed to visit the Khoo Kongsi, a beautiful Chinese mansion, functioning as a clan-house which displays elaborate and highly ornamented architecture: an impressive mark of the dominant presence of the Chinese in Penang. It is the grandest clan temple in the country and also one of the city's major historic attractions: The clan temple has retained its authentic historical setting, which includes an association building, a traditional theatre and the late 19th-century row-houses for clan members, all clustered around a granite-paved square.
Today for lunch, you will have another national favorite in Malaysia: the Char Koay Teow. Penang has its fair share of famous char Koay Teow stalls with their signature taste. Literally "stir-fried rice-cake strips", it is made from flat rice noodles stir-fried and dark soy sauce, chili, a small quantity of Belachan, whole prawns, deshelled blood cockles, bean sprouts, and chopped Chinese chives. The dish is commonly stir-fried with egg, slices of Chinese sausage, fish cake, bean sprouts, and less commonly with other ingredients.
Char Kway Teow is traditionally stirring-fried in pork fat, with crisp croutons of pork lard. In Penang, Char Kway Teow is commonly served on a piece of banana leaf on a plate, to enhance the aroma on the noodles.
13:00 After lunch, take a walk in narrow clan Jetties. There used to be seven jetties until one was demolished by fire and now only six remain. Billed as one of the last bastions of old Chinese settlements on the island, this waterfront society is home to houses on stilts of various Chinese clans. Located straight down from Lebuh Chulia at Pengkalan Weld, these water villages are over a century old. Each jetty is named after a Chinese clan – the Chew Jetty is the most tourist-friendly with the most stilt-houses, the long walkway, and a temple that is worth stopping.
Before returning to your hotel, you might be willing to enjoy a nice respite from the blistering tropical heat ordering a Cendol, A famous Malaysian dessert made of a bowl of shaved ice, filled with chewy green rice flour jelly (cendol), red beans, fresh coconut milk and a splash of Gula Melaka (brown sugar) syrup. Also, it is rather fascinating looking at the speed of preparation by the vendor. Return to the hotel and refresh.
19:00 Our guide will pick you up again and bring to enjoy a proud signature dish of Penang, Assam Laksa, a rich and spicy, fish-based soup noodle broth of tamarind juice, chili paste, lemongrass, topped with prawn paste and mackerel/sardine flakes. Normally served with either white or yellow noodles, some stalls have a choice of thick or thin bee hoon. Before heading back to the hotel, make a last stop at Gurney drive, to taste a Penang Rojak, a salad of bean curds, fritters (You Tiao), bean sprouts, cuttlefish and assortment of fruits covered in a thick syrupy peanut sauce. Freshly tossed with pineapple slices, the way to eat Rojak is by poking the fruits with a thin, wooden stick and dipping them into the sauce.
Check-in at t Eastern & Oriental Hotel Penang– Studio Suite or similar.
